Binghamton Devils News Release
SYRACUSE - Cory Schneider made 39 saves and Mikhail Maltsev scored in the second round of the shootout as the Binghamton Devils defeated the Syracuse Crunch on the road tonight inside Upstate Medical University Arena, 2-1.
There was no scoring in the first period as both sides combined for 52 minutes in penalties in the opening 20 minutes.
In the second period, Schneider denied Alexander Volkov on a penalty shot and both sides kept searching for the game's first goal of the night.
Syracuse broke the 0-0 game at 8:50 of the third period on a rebound chance. After two saves by Schneider, the puck hopped to the top of the crease and Alex Barre-Boulet buried the third chance for the game's first goal. The goal was Barre-Boulet's 12th of the year with assists from Gemel Smith and Danick Martel to give the Crunch a 1-0 lead.
Nathan Bastian tied the game late in regulation with 2:58 to go as he tipped in a shot from the top of the right circle. Michael McLeod found some time and ripped a shot towards the net that Bastian deflected by goaltender Spencer Martin for his fourth of the year. The goal tied the game at one with the lone assist coming from McLeod.
After no scoring in overtime, Maltsev scored in the third round and Schneider denied Chris Mueller for the win. Schneider stopped 39 of 40 shots in the win while Martin put away 29 of 30 in the loss.
The Devils are back home tomorrow night to face the Rochester Americans at 7:05 p.m. Come by early for live music from 6-7 p.m. on the concourse with $5 24-ounce draft beer and $6 oil cans between section 19 and 20. Tickets are available by calling or texting "TICKETS" to 607-722-7367.
