St. Cloud Rox News Release
BISMARCK, ND - The St. Cloud Rox (11-11) rolled past the Bismarck Larks (12-12) by a 16-2 score on Thursday, June 20th. All nine Rox starters scored a run in the win, which clinched a four-game series victory against the Larks.
Starting pitcher Brandt Thompson (Missouri State University) quickly set the tone of the game, firing five innings of one-run baseball. The Rox right-hander struck out eight Larks, including three in the first inning. Thompson has finished as the winning pitcher in each of his two starts this season, sporting a 2.69 earned run average in 10 innings of work. The Rox defense backed him up well on Thursday night, playing an error-free game.
The Rox also wasted little time providing their starter with run support, scoring a season-high 16 runs. Jackson Hauge (University of Kansas) started the fun with a long, solo home run - his team-leading fifth of the season - in the second inning. Between innings four and eight, the Rox would put 15 more runs on the board, plating multiple runs in each of those five frames. In the fourth, Ben Higdon (University of Kentucky) drilled a run-scoring double and Carter Hanson (University of Massachusetts) tagged an RBI single to set the outburst in motion.
Four different Rox hitters finished the night with multiple hits: Higdon, Hauge, Hanson, and Francesco Barbieri (Ave Maria University). Barbieri ripped an RBI double in the sixth that moved the Rox into an 8-1 lead. An additional four St. Cloud batters drove in multiple runs: Higdon, Hauge, Hanson, and Trey King (University of Georgia). King's first hit of the summer, a bases-clearing triple, served as the highlight of a six-run eighth inning for the Rox.
Today's All-Star Trophy and Awards Star of the Game is Brandt Thomspon!
The Rox now move on to a two-game series against the Stingers in Willmar, which includes a 6:35 p.m. first pitch on Friday and a 7:05 p.m. start on Saturday. Rox baseball will return to St. Cloud on Sunday, June 23rd for a game against the Mankato MoonDogs, presented by Coborn's. It'll be a Coborn's Kids Day, which means kids will have the opportunity to run the bases and get autographs on the field after the game.
