Reign Fall Short in 3-1 Loss to Stingrays

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - The Ontario Reign, defending Pacific Division Champions and proud affiliate of the NHL's 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings, couldn't come back from a two-goal deficit in Saturday's 3-1 loss to the South Carolina Stingrays at North Charleston Coliseum.
South Carolina was first on the board with an early goal from Hunter Bishop at the 3:24 mark. Shortly after, Andrew Cherniwchan bumped up the Stingrays' lead to two with a shot through traffic that found the back of the net. Captain Shawn Weller assisted and Tommy Cross earned his second assist of the night on the goal. The Reign picked up their possession, but were scoreless through the first period.
Everett Sheen recorded his first goal of the season just a minute and half in with a give-and-go play with Kyle Kraemer. Dan DaSilva and Kraemer extended their point streaks to three and two games respectively. During the frame Ontario outshot South Carolina 17 to 12, but were held to the lone tally.
Despite Ontario having three power-play chances and South Carolina having two, neither team got on the board until the final 40 seconds of regulation. Reign goaltender Chris Carrozzi was pulled to have a sixth skater put pressure on the Stingrays in the final minute, but Weller sent a long shot into the net to get the final goal of the game. Cherniwchan got his second point of the game on the goal and Cross picked up his third point.
Carrozzi stopped 28 of 30 shots and had the empty-netter, and rookie goaltender Shawn Hunwick got the win in his professional debut allowing just one of 39 shots to find the back of the net.
