Glads Can't Hold Late Lead, Fall in OT 3-2

DULUTH, GA - The Greenville Road Warriors came back from a late third period deficit Saturday at the Arena at Gwinnett Center to sneak past the Gwinnett Gladiators 3-2 in overtime.

Shayne Wiebe scored for the Road Warriors (2-2-0-0) to tie the game at 2-2 at the 17:47 mark of the third on the power play to force overtime. Just 1:27 into the extra period forward Brandon Wong worked his way through the Gwinnett (0-2-1-0) defense and beat goaltender Mike Lee top-shelf to seal the Gladiators fate.

Gwinnett did pick up their first point of the new season, as Coyotes goalie prospect Mike Lee stopped 23 shots in a losing cause. The Gladiators outshot the Warriors 30-26, dropping their third straight game where they outshot the opposition.

For the first time all season the Gladiators took a lead at 14:21 of the opening period. Forward Tyler Murovich found Casey Pierro-Zabotel open in the slot on the power play. Despite his first shot being blocked, Pierro-Zabotel stuck with the play and buried the rebound to put Gwinnett ahead. Defenseman Kyle Lawson added an assist on the play, and now has at least one helper in each of his first five games as a Gladiator including the preseason.

Gwinnett carried the 1-0 lead into the second, but the Road Warriors answered back. Jeremy Gouchie deflected a shot from the point over the glove of Lee to even the score 4:02 in to the period.

Gwinnett took the lead back in the second. Forward Tony Lucia found Andy Brandt in the slot for a one-timer at the 11:43 mark with an additional assist going to Ryan Donald. That lead stood until Wiebe tied the game late.

The Gladiators will be back in action on the road in Greenville, South Carolina Sunday to face the Road Warriors once again at 3 p.m.
