Jackals Reel Off Fourth Straight Win, Defeat Wheeling 5-0
October 20, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, N.Y. - The largest crowd of the young season was raucous on Saturday night as it witnessed the Elmira Jackals claim a 5-0 victory over the Wheeling Nailers at First Arena. The win pushed Elmira's record to 4-0-0 on the season.
Just as he had done the previous night Artem Demkov staked Elmira to a 1-0 lead with a goal from the doorstep. After taking a feed from Dustin Gazley he shuffled a shot between the pads of Wheeling goalie Scott Darling. It was Demkov's third of the season and Chris Wideman picked up the secondary helper. A few minutes later Louie Caporusso stole an attempted outlet pass by Darling and quickly wristed the puck across the goal line for his first of the season at 9:52. Elmira's two goals came on a 14-shot barrage in the frame. Jackals goalie Marc Cheverie faced nine shots and turned them all away.
In the second Elmira's power play delivered the fireworks with Demkov and Andrew Rowe lighting the fuse. Demkov scored the first of three power play goals at 6:03 with Rowe picking up the assist. Then Demkov set up Rowe on the man advantage at 8:30. It was Rowe's first goal as a Jackal, but not his last for the night. With six minutes left in the second Danny New and Wideman teamed up to assist on Rowe's second power play goal. Elmira nearly shot 50 percent in the second as three of its eight shots beat Darling. Marc Cheverie was tested 11 times but answered the call each time.
In the third Elmira's offense took a back seat to Cheverie's attempt to pick up his first shutout of the season. Wheeling tested him with 10 shots, and the toughest one came late in the stanza. Bobby Farnham, who scored on Friday night, was sprung on a breakaway just after his penalty expired. Cutting to the net from the left wing, Farnham tried to beat Cheverie low to the blocker side, but the door was slammed shut.
Cheverie totaled 30 saves in the winning effort while Elmira was 3-for-6 on the power play and 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.
