Titans Drop First of the Season - Fall in Cincinnati, 6-4
October 20, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Titans News Release
Cincinnati, OH - All good things must and do come to an end - and so it was for the Trenton Titans four-game win streak to start the 2012-13 season. In a game marred by 20 combined penalties and three game misconducts, the Titans - proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers - lost their first game of the year, 6-4, to the Cincinnati Cyclones.
Cincinnati (2-0-1, 5 points) has now won eight straight over the Titans (4-1, 8 points) and six consecutive against Trenton at home. Despite the loss Trenton still sits atop the Eastern Conferences Atlantic Division, tied with Elmira.
The tough night began immediately as the Cyclones peppered goalie Scott Wedgewood (3-1, 29 saves) with 15 shots in the first. After failing to score first for the first time this year, Blake Kessel got his second of the season from Tyler Hostetter and Jason Akeson at 9:18 to knot the score at 1-1.
Despite being outshot 15-3 in the period, Trenton ended the first down only 2-1.
Things got no better in the second when Cam Reed put the Cyclones up 3-1. Brian Haczyk cut the deficit back to one at 8:29, after creating a breakaway from the Titans' defensive zone and beating Zoltan Hetenyi between the pads, making it 3-2. After a Brian O'Hanley goal a minute later made it 4-2, Marcel Nobels brought the deficit back to one with a power play talley at 16:22. His second of the season ended the scoring in the period, but Trenton would get no closer.
Cincinnati pushed two more goals through in the first five minutes of the third to effectively end any comeback. Trenton's Eric Baier finished the scoring with 3:31 left, getting his first of the season on a blast from the point.
Brian Foster replaced Hetenyi in the third, stopping nine shots to get the win. For the night Trenton was outshot 35-19.
On a positive note, Trenton's Andy Bohmback picked up two assists, raising his league-leading total to eight, while running his point-scoring streak to five games.
The Titans return to action next weekend with a pair of home games at the Sun National Bank Center versus Toledo on Friday and Saturday. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:05 pm. Prior to Saturday's game the Titans will play an Alumni Game at 4:30. Following the Toledo contest, Trenton will auction off its pink sweaters to conclude its Pink The Rink - Breast Cancer Awareness promotion. Proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Breast Cancer Resource Center of Princeton, NJ, to promote education, awareness and research to survive from and find the cure for breast cancer.
Titans' Tuesdays - Tuesday's on the radio are now "Titans Tuesdays" throughout the hockey season, as Head Coach Vince Williams takes to the airways twice. First, he will be interviewed live on WCTC-1450 AM at 1:25 pm to talk about the team. Then at 8 pm, he will join Titans' broadcaster Daryle Dobos on the Trenton Titans Coaches Show on the Titans' flagship station, 107.7 FM The Bronc. The show will broadcast live from Killarney's Publick House in Hamilton Township, NJ.
The Trenton Titans returned in the 2011-12 hockey season after a five year hiatus and boasted a 26.1% increase in attendance over the previous year, the largest of any team in the 20-team ECHL.
