Alaska Aces News Release
The Utah Grizzlies scored the first four goals of the game, and held off a third period charge from the Alaska Aces in a 5-2 win on Friday night from the Sullivan Arena, spoiling Alaska's home opener. The Aces fell to 1-2 on the young season, and had a streak of eight straight home-opening wins snapped. The Aces and Grizzlies are back on Saturday night to conclude the weekend. Tickets are currently on sale at the Aces office, Fred Meyer locations and www.ticketmaster.com. All Aces games can be heard on NewsTalk 103.7FM and 750AM KFQD. The Aces outshot the Grizzlies 13-5 in the opening frame, but Utah rookie defenseman Drew MacKenzie scored the only goal of the period on a wrist shot from the slot at 6:14.
The Grizzlies then opened a large lead in the second period with three unanswered goals. Brad Mills began the flurry at 2:06 of the period, followed by Colin Vock's tally at 14:48, and Chris Donovan's late goal at 18:28. The Aces trailed 4-0 heading into the third period.
Alaska immediately responded in the opening seconds of the final period. Joey Crabb sprung Brandon Dubinsky on a breakaway and Dubinsky beat Andrew Engelage high, glove side 14 seconds into the period to get Alaska on the board. Later in the period Utah's Riley Armstrong was given a match penalty for an illegal check to the head of Alaska's Kane Lafranchise, who left and did not return. On the ensuing major power play, William Wrenn scored a rebound goal for the Aces at 8:50 to get Alaska within two goals. However, Utah's Mitch Wahl scored at 11:32 to secure the 5-2 win for the Grizzlies and keep them undefeated on the young season.
James Reid (1-1) suffered the loss making 17 saves on 22 shots while Andrew Engelage (3-0) earned the win, making 33 saves on 35 shots. The Aces went 1-6 on the power play and the Grizzlies went 0-5. Alaska outshot Utah 35-22 in the game.
