Memphis Redbirds News Release
NASHVILLE, TN - The Memphis Redbirds proved victorious in the opener of a six-game series over the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday night at First Horizon Park by a final score of 2-1.
Starting pitcher Steven Matz made his fourth MLB Rehab start with the Memphis Redbirds on Tuesday night and tossed 4.1 innings on 81 pitches. The veteran left-handed pitcher struck out seven batters and allowed just two hits without allowing a run.
Memphis scored its only runs in the top of the second innings. With two outs and no one on base, the Redbirds bottom of the order started a string of four straight singles. The final hit of the streak came from center fielder and leadoff hitter Ben DeLuzio, an RBI single to put Memphis up 2-0.
With two hits on the night, left fielder Alec Burleson reached 100 hits on the season, the first Triple-A hitter to reach the century mark in base hits this season. In his first game in nearly two weeks, shortstop Paul DeJong reached base twice, walking in his first two plate appearances.
Right-handed reliever Zach McAllister appeared for his 34th time in 2022 and earned the victory. McAllister is second in the International League in appearances out of the bullpen.
The Memphis Redbirds (47-38) return to Nashville, Tennessee on Wednesday night to take on the International League West leading Nashville Sounds in a six-game series leading up to the All-Star Break.
