LAST TIME OUT

WORCESTER, MA (July 10, 2022) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (40-44) dropped the Sunday finale to the Worcester Red Sox 8-3. The loss ended a four-game win streak while SWB still won the series over the WooSox.

Worcester tagged Ken Waldichuk for three runs in the first inning. Waldichuk threw 34 pitches and faced eight batters in the inning. It was keyed by a Ryan Fitzgerald three-run homer, his 16th longball of the season. The two teams would trade solo shots in the second inning. Jake Bauers hit his second of the series. Connor Wong responded for the Sox in the bottom half.

Waldichuk lasted just two innings, tied for the second-shortest of his career. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre would respond with a Derek Dietrich two-run blast in the fourth inning to trim the deficit to one, 4-3. The homer for Dietrich was his first since May 26 (45 days). The Red Sox opened up the game with a run in the seventh and three in the eighth, leading them to an 8-3 win.

Waldichuk (2-3) took the loss. AJ Politi (2-0) tossed two innings of relief and was given the win. The RailRiders won four-of-six at Polar Park, their fifth series victory of the season.

NEWS & NOTES

FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders welcome the Louisville bats for their first trip to PNC Field since July 19-21, 2019 (Louisville won series 2-1). The Bats are just the second western division team the RailRiders have faced this year, the other being the Toledo Mud Hens (split series 3-3 in Ohio).

SEVENTH HEAVEN? - The RailRiders have been in eighth place or lower in the International League East since May 1 (72 days). With a win tonight and a Norfolk loss, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre would find themselves tied for seventh place. The Tides take on the Worcester Red Sox at home tonight at 6:35 PM with DL Hall on the mound.

STILL WON THOUGH - Despite losing on Sunday, the RailRiders won the series over the WooSox (four-of-six), their third series victory at Polar Park in five tries. It was their fifth series victory of the season. SWB has not lost a series since May 31- June 5 when they dropped five-of-six to the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. That's five straight series with either a win or split (four wins, one split, 21-10 record).

100 - The RailRiders enter the series with 99 franchise victories in 178 contests against the Louisville Bats as they search for number 100 tonight.

HERE'S JONNY - Jonathan Loáisiga joins Scranton/Wilkes-Barre tonight on an MLB rehab assignment. He becomes the fourth Yankees rehabber, third pitcher, to join the RailRiders this season (Tim Locastro, Aroldis Chapman, Domingo Germán). Loáisiga tossed a 1-2-3 inning for the Tamp Tarpons with a strikeout on Saturday, July 9. He was placed on the Yankees 15-Day Injured List retroactive to May 23 with right shoulder inflammation. He has appeared in 18 games for New York this season, going 1-2 with a 7.02 ERA. Loáisiga is slated to pitch one inning of relief tonight.

COMO LA FLOR - Estevan Florial enters tonight on an eleven-game hitting streak, during which he is hitting .366 (15-41, 6 HR, 7 2B). He had another eleven-game hitting streak this year that lasted June 5 - June 18 (16-46, .348). If he extends it to twelve games, it will be the longest hit streak of his career. Prior to these two eleven-game streaks, Florial had another one July 30 - August 12, 2017 while with the Charleston RiverDogs (15-for-45, .333).

BREAUX-MANCE - Josh Breaux joined the RailRiders from Double-A Somerset on July 2 and has gone six for his first eight with an RBI, triple and a pair of walks. When Breaux left Somerset, he was batting just .204 in 53 games. Defensively, Breaux back-picked a runner at first in his Triple-A debut on Sunday, July 3 then threw out his first would-be base stealer at second in Sunday's finale in Worcester.

GUESS WHO'S BACK, BACK AGAIN -Infielder Oswaldo Cabrera returns to the RailRiders tonight after dealing with a right shoulder injury. He has not played in a game for SWB since May 8 (22 GP: .186/.255/.337). Cabrera has been rehabbing with Tampa (A) and in the Complex League, going 5-for-14 in five games with a homer and a double. Cabrera is the number 13 prospect in the Yankees system according to Baseball America.

JAKE SMASH - Friday, Jake Bauers launched his third RailRiders home run to right-center 111 MPH off the bat at Worcester. It sailed 470 feet, good for the longest home run by an opponent in Polar Park history. The longest all-time homer at Polar Park was hit by Worcester's Tate Matheny on September 12, 2021, going 481 feet. Bauers' long ball is tied for the fourth longest amongst all batters at the Red Sox yard all-time.

ON DECK - The RailRiders square off with Louisville tomorrow. Wednesday is Waggin' Wednesday and $1 Hot Dog Night at PNC Field. Fans can bring their four-legged canine friends to the game, presented by Magic 93. $1 Dog Night is presented by Sahlen's Hot Dogs.

STREAKY -Greg Weissert has not been charged with a run in eleven straight appearances, the longest stretch for any RailRiders pitcher this season... Shane Greene and Jimmy Cordero are on three-game scoreless streaks... Phillip Evans is on a five-game hit streak and a seven-game on base streak... Derek Dietrich is on a three-game hit streak...

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION - The New York Yankees (61-25) had yesterday off, but lost the finale 11-6 to the Boston Red Sox to split the series.
