Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Omaha Storm Chaser (42-42) dropped the series opener against the Rochester Red Wings (45-40) 5-2. The two teams are facing off for the first time since the early 1990s.
The Storm Chasers surrendered the game's first runs in the second. A single started the rally with one out before a two-out double scored the runner. A walk put runners on first and second before a home run cleared the bases and put the Red Wings up 4-0.
Shortstop led Iván Castillo off the fourth inning with a ground rule double to center field and moved to third on a past ball. Right fielder Dairon Blanco plated Omaha's first run of the game with a groundout that scored Castillo.
Right-hander Daniel Mengden (Loss, 5-4) allowed four runs in the second but settled down and went 5.0 innings, striking out five in his 14th start of the season.
Center fielder Drew Waters, hit a triple off the left field wall in his Royals organizational debut. A sacrifice fly from Castillo would cut the Red Wings lead to a pair at 4-2. Blanco reached on a Rochester fielding error before stealing his team-leading 20th base before ending up stranded to end the inning.
The Red Wings put another run in the seventh, using a single and three walks to put the score at 5-2.
Castillo started the ninth with his second ground rule double of the game to put a runner in scoring position for the Storm Chasers. Blanco walked to put the game-tying run at the plate with nobody out in the ninth. The pair would end up stranded as the Red Wings struck out three in a row.
The Storm Chasers continue their series against the Red Wings Wednesday with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. CDT. Coverage will begin at 5:45 p.m. on the Sarpy County Tourism Pregame Show on 1180 The Zone.
Omaha returns home for a four-game series after the MLB All-Star break for a four-game series against the Iowa Cubs from July 22-55. The series will include Marvel's Defenders of the Diamond on July 22.
