Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (38-46) got the series started right with an 8-2 victory over the Buffalo Bison (43-42) on Tuesday night at Principal Park.

Both starting pitchers opened the game with a hitless, scoreless inning before the offense got started in the second. Buffalo struck first when they strung together two singles and a double to open the inning, giving them a 1-0 lead. Luke Farrell shut them down after that, however, and limited the damage to one run.

The I-Cubs quickly tied it up in their half of the inning on a solo home run by Jared Young, and then took their first lead of the game with another solo blast in the fourth, this time from Frank Schwindel.

Wyatt Short took over for Farrell in the sixth and held the Bisons scoreless, but a double and an error in the seventh plated another run for Buffalo, tying the game up at 2-2.

Once again, however, the I-Cubs had an answer in the bottom half of the inning. Jared Young led off with a double, and then singles from John Hicks and Dixon Machado resulted in two more runs for Iowa, giving them back the lead at 4-2. They didn't stop there, and sent eight men to the plate in the eighth inning, using a hit batter, three singles and a double to add four more insurance runs. After the eighth, the score stood at 8-2.

Buffalo wouldn't get a chance to come back, as Erich Uelmen entered for the ninth and sent the Bisons down one-two-three to close out the series-opening win for the I-Cubs.

POSTGAME NOTES:

Dixon Machado collected his first four-RBI game of the season tonight. He now has five multi-RBI games this year.

Iowa's bullpen continued their success, combining for four innings and only one unearned run on four hits and no walks. The group has pitched to a 0.86 ERA (3ER/31.1IP) over their last seven games.

Wyatt Short was credited with his second win of the season, bringing his record to 2-1.

Frank Schwindel became the 20th player to homer for the I-Cubs this season with his fourth-inning solo shot.

Iowa will face off with the Buffalo Bisons again tomorrow. First pitch between the two clubs is set for 6:38. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
