Reading Royals News Release

TOP NOTES OF THE WEEK

1. Friday's loss to the Cincinnati Cyclones at the Sovereign Center in Reading marked the first time in Royals' team history that the organization lost the first three home games in regulation time. In the inaugural season, 2001-02, the Royals started 0-2-1 at home prior before registering a win at the Sovereign Center. Reading snapped this season's home losing streak with the 6-2 win over the Idaho Steelheads on Saturday.

2. In the first five games of this year, the Royals went 1-4-0. That is not the worst five game start in the history of the team. In 2004-05, Reading lost the first five games (0-5-0) before picking up the team's first win. Of course, that first win turned into nine in a row (11/07 - 12/10/04) (9-0-0), and that year's version of the Royals went on to .win a team record 43 games (43-23-7=93).

3. In Friday's game against Cincinnati, the Royals fell behind 6:12 into the game and never re-tied or held a lead through the remaining 53:48. Taking that into account, the Royals had trailed the opposition in 220:39 of the total 300 game minutes played through the first five regular season games-which was almost 75% of the season to that point. (The Royals held a lead for only 16:56 in those first five games.) In contrast, in Saturday's win over Idaho, the Royals grabbed the early 9:42 into the hockey game and held onto it for the final 50:18.

4. In Friday's game, the Cyclones outscored the Royals 2-0 in the first period and led 4-2 after two periods. In the first five games of the season, Reading was outscored in the first two periods by a total of 16-6 (9-3 in the first period and 7-3 in the second). Once again, the Royals turned that around on Saturday night against Idaho, scoring three first period goals, while allowing Idaho only 1 in the first forty minutes..

5. Saturday's win over Idaho marked the first time this season that the Royals have held a lead after the first period (3-0) and second period (3-1). Prior to that game, the Royals had trailed in all five games after the first and after the second, i.e. the team had not even been tied with the opposition at the end of a period to that point.

6. In Saturday's win over the Steelheads, the Royals scored a season high six goals-and they came from six different players. This continued a trend for Reading through the first six games of the season: no player has had a multi-goal game to this point, i.e. in every game played the team's scoring has been spread throughout the line-up. As of this point, twelve different players have scored at least one goal for the Royals, and no player has scored more than three (and four players have done that: Mac Faulkner, Shawn Snider, Dan Rudisuela and Jeff Corey).

7. Brock Hooton scored the first goal for the Royals on Friday night, extending his point streak to a team high four games (2g-2a), which ended in Saturday's win over Idaho.. Shawn Snider was held off the board in Friday's game, snapping his personal four game point streak (2g-3a) (10/17 - 10/26/08). Tyler Doig racked up an assist on Friday night and picked up a pair of helpers on Saturday to extend his personal point (and assist) streak to four games (1g-7a). Doig's two assists in Saturday's win marked his team-leading third multi-point performance of the season.

8. Royals' captain Matt Herneisen scored his first goal of the season late in the first period for the Royals on Saturday night and, true to form, it proved to be a big one, i.e., the game winning goal in Reading's first home win of the year. That goal also completed the first period 'Gordie Howe Hat-Trick for Herneisen, who also assisted on the Royals second goal of the game, earlier in the first period-and after which he promptly engaged in his third fight of the season.

9. Goaltender Danny Taylor registered his first win of the year, when he stopped 36 of the 38 shots he faced from the Idaho Steelheads on Saturday night. That game marked the third time in four starts for Taylor this year that he has faced over 37 shots in the sixty minutes of hockey. Taylor has stopped a 129 of the 142 shots he has faced so far this season for a save percentage of .908. His current goals against average is 3.02.

10. In Saturday's game, the Royals power play scored a team high three times (3-7)-with all three PPGs coming in the third period. After being held off the board in the first two games of the season, the Royals power play has scored at least one goal in four consecutive games, going 7 for 26 in that time span, which translates into a 26.9% scoring ratio. Over the course of the season, the Royals are scoring power play goals at the rate of 20.6% (7 for 34), which is eighth out of the twenty-three teams in the league.

11. The Royals penalty kill got touched up for three goals by Cincinnati on Friday night, and the Steelheads bagged a pair of PPGs against Reading on Saturday. The Royals penalty killers are yet to keep the opposition's PP off the board in a game this season-and the team has allowed multi-power play goals against in three games this year. The Royals PK is currently killing at a 75.6% clip (11 PPGA in 45 chances), which is eighteenth in the league.

CLOSING NOTES

1. Mac Faulkner scored a goal in each of the two games played by the Royals this past week, and he also registered a pair of assists in Saturday's win. In Friday's loss to Cincinnati, Faulkner (for the second time this year) registered a team high 8 shots on net. Faulkner currently leads the Royals with 32 shots on goal. (The closest player to him is Dan Rudisuela, who has registered 18 shots.) .

2. Dan Rudisuela also scored a goal in each of the Royals games this past week; and he picked up a helper to go with his goal in Saturday's win to rack up his second multi-point performance of the year.

3. Mike Salekin bagged his first goal (and multi-point game: 1g-2a) in Saturday's win. Salekin's goal was one of three power play goals scored by the Royals in the third period against the Steelheads. Last year, Salekin scored four regular sea- son goals and two of them came while the Royals were playing with the man ad- vantage .

4. Saturday's win over Idaho marked the first time that the Royals have ever played a team from the West Division of the ECHL. With that win, Reading has racked up a record of 12-2-2 against teams from the National Conference.

5. Reading will face former Royal Michael Cohen (and his Cincinnati Cyclone team- mates) twice this week. In two games played against the Royals (one with Johns- town last year and one with Cincy this year), Cohen has scored three goals.
