November 3, 2008 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ -- The Trenton Devils started the week with a Thursday night win at home against the Johnstown Chiefs, followed up by a shootout loss at Elmira and a loss to the Idaho Steelheads. Trenton will play back-to-back games at Sovereign Bank Arena against the Dayton Bombers this weekend.
DEVILS CHOP CHIEFS: A four-goal barrage in the third period gave the Trenton Devils their first win at Sovereign Bank Arena this season, as they defeated the Johnstown Chiefs, 5-2. With the score tied at one going into the third, Chris Tutalo scored his second of the season 1:39 into the period. However, that was quickly matched by the Chiefs as Jason Spence tied the game 24 seconds later. Tyler Burton put the Devils aheadfor good as his power play goal at the 5:58 mark gave Trenton a 3-2 lead. Scott Bartlett and Eric Castonguay provided insurance goals for the Devils en route to their 5-2 victory. Burton, Castonguay, and Trevor Kell each had a goal and an assist as Jeff Frazee made 29 saves for his second win of the season.
DEVILS FORCE SHOOTOUT, LOSE TO JACKALS: The Devils came back from a three-goal deficit in the third period to earn a point in Elmira Saturday night, but lost in the shootout to the Jackals, 4-3. Trevor Kell put the Devils on the board with 11 minutes left in regulation to make the score 3-1 Elmira. Kell added another tally on the power play with 3:24 to go in the contest to put Trenton within a goal. After Ryan Gibbons took a double minor to give the Devils a late power play, Eric Castonguay capitalized with his third goal of the season with 1:36 remaining, forcing overtime. After an exciting overtime period which saw both teams have opportunities to win the game, the Jackals would eventually win in the shootout on Josh Aspenlind's sixth round goal. Castonguay had a three point night with a goal and two assists, while center Brett Pilkington notched three assists against his former team.
STEELHEADS STOP DEVILS: The Devils had a tough Sunday afternoon in their first meeting against the Idaho Steelheads as Trenton lost, 3-1, at Sovereign Bank Arena. The Steelheads controlled most of the contest, as they outshot the Devils, 38-18. Jason Smith kept the Devils in the game by making 35 saves, but the Trenton offense never really got going against the stingy Steelheads defense. Idaho scored a goal late in the first period on a Bryan McGregor pass that went off of Ryan Gunderson's skate and into the net. In the second period, the Steelheads scored twice in 40 seconds to give themselves a 3-0 lead. Gunderson gave life to the Devils 16:09 into the second with his second goal of the season, trimming to Idaho lead to two. Unfortunately for Trenton, it was the only scoring they would get as they lost, 3-1. Eric Castonguay picked up an assist to continue his seven-game point scoring streak, while Gunderson's tally gave the Devils a power play goal in each their games this season.
ERIC MAKES IT LOOK EASY: Eric Castonguay is off to a strong start this season with 12 points through his first eight games. Castonguay is tied for sixth in the ECHL in scoring and has scored points in his last seven games. His four-game multi-point scoring streak was snapped Sunday afternoon when he was held to one assist.
RYAN RISES TO THE TOP: Ryan Gunderson is also off to a good start this season with nine points in eight games. His total is tied for first among defensemen in the ECHL, though Gunderson wins the tiebreaker as he has played in fewer games than the co-leader, Salmon Kings defenseman Dylan Yeo. The Pennsylania native has points in all but two games this season.
POWER ON THE ROAD: The Devils have done well with their power play on the road. Away from Sovereign Bank Arena, the Devils are 26.9% (7-for-26) with the man advantage.
QUICK HITS: Several changes were made to the roster this week as a result of injuries that have effected the team; center Brett Pilkington and defenseman Gord Burnett were acquired in separate deals from the Elmira Jackals for future considerations...Forward Matt Radoslovich returned to the Trenton lineup Sunday three nights after crashing face first into the boards...defenseman Jay Bletzer and forward Eric Thomassian each made their debuts this past weekend for the Devils...Goaltender Jeff Frazee was called up by the New Jersey Devils (NHL) for emergency purposes Sunday as a result of Martin Brodeur's injury from Saturday night; Frazee's spot was replaced by emergency backup goaltender Anthony Felice.
