Alaska takes rubber match from Fresno

Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Jean-Philippe Lamoureux stopped all 22 shots he faced for his second shutout in eight days as Alaska claimed its rubber match with Fresno, 3-0, before 3,731 Sunday evening at Sullivan Arena.

With the victory, the Aces (5-2) jump a point ahead of idle Phoenix (4-2-1) atop the West Division standings. Idaho (3-2-2) finished up its East Coast swing with a win at Trenton, meaning that first place will be on the line when Alaska visits Boise for a three-game series next week.

Corbin Schmidt scored the only goal Lamoureux would need on the power play at 8:38 of the first period, a one-timer from the high slot that beat Falcons goalie Joe Fallon upstairs. Colin Hemingway followed with another power play goal five minutes into the second period, his second goal in as many nights (he scored the game-winner Saturday) and his fifth of the season. Josh Soares sealed the win with an empty-netter in the game's final minutes, his ninth goal in the last six games.

Alaska scored five power play goals in 19 tries during the series, which began with a 5-1 Fresno win Friday. The Aces limited the Falcons (4-2) to just a pair of goals in 20 cracks at the man advantage over the weekend.

Alaska travels to Idaho for another three-games-in-three nights set, beginning Wednesday at 5:10 p.m. ADT. By the end of next week, the Aces will have played six games in eight nights. Alaska swept the 2007 Kelly Cup champions in the opening round of last year's playoffs, winning the first two games in Boise. All three tilts next week will be broadcast live on the flagship home of Aces hockey, KFQD 750 AM.
