Gladiators Drop 6-2 decision to Everblades

The Gwinnett Gladiators gave up three power play goals and a shorthanded goal as they dropped a 6-2 decision to the Florida Everblades at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Monday, November 3rd. Gwinnett got goals from Jeff Prough and Jeff Mason in the loss as the Gladiators fall to 2-2-2 on the season.

The Gladiators and the Everblades exchanged power play goals in the first period as the two teams finished the first period tied at 1-1.

Gwinnett got on the board first on Jeff Prough's second goal of the season as he took a centering pass out of the corner from Dan Sullivan and whipped a one-timer past Florida netminder David Leggio for the goal. Scott Marchesi also had an assist on the power play goal for the Gladiators at 5:32 of the first period.

The Everblades answered as Ernie Hartlieb picked up a rebound that bounced off the goal post and tossed the puck past Kevin Nastiuk to equalize the contest at one. Yanick Tifu and Kevin Baker collected the assists on the power play goal for Florida.

Florida rattled off four goals in the second period and took a 5-2 lead into the locker room at the second intermission. Kevin Baker gave the Everblades their first lead of the game just 29 seconds into the second period with marker on a 5-on-3 power play. Tifu notched his second assist of the game while Harlieb also had a helper on the goal.

Ryan Lang stepped out of the penalty box and took a pass in the neutral zone at 4:44 of the second period and beat Nastiuk on a breakaway to give Florida a 3-1 lead on the Gladiators. Ross carlson set up the marker feeding Lang the Hail-Mary pass from his own defensive zone.

Kevin Baker pushed the Everblades lead to 4-1 at 10:34 of the middle stanza feeding a shot through traffic that eluded Nastiuk for the goal. Hartlieb and Kyle Peto notched the assists on the goal for Florida.

Jeff Mason got one of the four goals back about a minute and a half later as he pinched down the right wing to keep the play alive and beat Leggio on a wrap around to cut the Florida lead to 4-2. Brad Schell posted an assist on the goal at 12:06 of the second period.

Florida regained the three-goal advantage with their third power play goal of the contest with 2:55 left in the second period. Aaron Brocklehurst and Jonathan Paiement collected the assists on the goal for Florida as they hooked up to set up Lang's second marker of the contest.

Mathieu Roy rounded out the scoring in the contest with the only goal in the third period. Roy outskated a Gladiators defenseman and beat Nastiuk on a shorthanded breakaway at 16:25 of the thrid period. Baker notched an assist on the goal as he sprung Roy on the break.

Nastiuk finished with 16 saves for Gwinnett in the losing effort. Gwinnett went 1-for-11 on the power play while Florida converted on 3-of-9 man advantage chances in the win.

The Gladiators continue the 2008-09 season on Friday, November 7th at the Germain Arena in Estero, Florida as the Gladiators battle the Florida Everblades at 7:30 p.m.

The league has drawn over four million fans each of the last five years and 11 times in the past 12 seasons.
