RailRiders Bats Nearly Silent in Doubleheader Defeats

MOOSIC, Pa. - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders were swept in a doubleheader by the Buffalo Bisons on Tuesday night at PNC Field. The Bisons took the opener 5-1 and won the nightcap 3-0.

Gleyber Torres was 0-for-3 at the plate in game one, playing in the second game of his MLB rehab assignment while playing all seven innings at shortstop.

Buffalo took the lead in the top of the first against MLB rehabber Michael King, when Richard Urena connected for a two-run home run to center. King (0-1) lasted 0.2 innings, and allowed two runs on two hits, striking out one and not allowing a walk.

Nash Knight took Clarke Schmidt deep to lead off the second and grow the Bisons lead to 3-0. Schmidt settled down and threw a season-high 4.1 innings, allowing one run on five hits, striking out five and walking two.

The RailRiders got on the board in the bottom of the second, when Jonathan Davis launched a solo home run to center off Bowden Francis to close the gap to 3-1. It was the second home run of the season with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for Davis, who played for the Bisons earlier this year.

The Bisons tacked on two more runs in the top of the seventh against Reggie McClain extend the lead and close out a 5-1 victory.

In the night cap, the Bisons jumped out to a lead two batters into the game when Forrest Wall singled and scored on an Otto Lopez single. Buffalo rallied for two runs on four hits in the first against Brian Keller, who was helped by two outfield assists by right fielder Trey Amburgey in the inning.

Reggie Pruitt homered off Brody Koerner in the top of the fifth to extend the Buffalo lead to 3-0. Meanwhile, the RailRiders struggled against a menagerie of Bisons pitchers, collecting only two hits against six pitchers in the first six innings of the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, Rob Brantly walked, Matt Pita reached on an infield single and Brandon Wagner walked to bring the winning run to the plate with two outs. However, Hobie Harris got Max Burt to fly out to center for the final out.

By virtue of falling in both games, Buffalo and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre are now tied for first place in Triple-A East Northeast Division.

POSTGAME NOTES: Tuesday was the sixth doubleheader played by the RailRiders this season, and the first time they were swept in a twin bill... SWB has been shut out seven times this year, including three times in the last two weeks.

The RailRiders continue their series with the Bisons on Wednedsday night at PNC Field. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. LHP Matt Krook (3-4, 4.62) gets the start for SWB, while Buffalo counters with LHP Zach Logue (6-3, 3.97).
