Norfolk Tides News Release
NORFOLK, Va --- The Norfolk Tides (74-47) defeated the Durham Bulls (68-54), 3-1, on Wednesday night at Harbor Park. The win puts the Tides at 13-4 against the Bulls, clinching the best season record against Durham in Orioles affiliate franchise history.
Neither team scored through the first four innings. Tides starter Justin Armbruester ended up lasting 5.0 innings without allowing a run. He gave up a hit and two walks while striking out six.
He would end up exiting as the pitcher of record because Norfolk went on to score three runs in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Connor Norby scored on a wild pitch to break the game open. In the same at bat, Coby Mayo blooped a broken-bat two-run double down the right field line to put the score at 3-1.
The only run for Durham came in the seventh when Tristan Gray hit a solo home run in the seventh inning. The Tides bullpen was lights out from there, with Tyler Wells tossing a scoreless eighth and DL Hall closing the game for his first save of the season, as Norfolk won 3-1.
Norfolk is back in action tomorrow afternoon for game three of the series with first pitch scheduled for 12:05 p.m. Scheduled to take the hill for the Tides is LHP Bruce Zimmermann (3-5, 3.63) while RHP Nathan Wiles (5-1, 5.40) is expected to start for the Bulls.
POSTGAME NOTES
Norby Breaks Runs Record: Going 0-for-1 with a run and three walks was Connor Norby...the run was the 82nd of his season, setting the Orioles affiliate single season record, passing Ryan Mountcastle (81, 2019)...the three walks also matched a career-high, the third time he's done so in his career and most recently did so in game one on August 13 with Bowie at Akron.
Lewin Lays In: Getting another multi-hit game was Lewin Díaz, who went 2-for-4 with a double...it was his fifth straight multi-hit effort, tying a season-high for the Tides (Joey Ortiz, June 28 - July 2)...in 17 games since July 26, Díaz has hit safely in 14-of-17 games batting .366 (22-for-60) with six runs, seven doubles, two home runs, six RBI and four walks while slashing .406/.583/.989.
Extra Mayo: The only Tide with an RBI tonight was Coby Mayo, who went 1-for-3 with a two-run double and a walk...he's had a multi-RBI game in four of his last nine games...in that span (since August 13), Mayo is hitting .300 (9-for-30) with five runs, three doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI and seven walks while slashing .447/.600/1.047.
Bull Wrangling: With the win tonight, the Tides increase their regular season East Division lead to 6.5, which means Norfolk will maintain the division lead through the end of the series...the Tides are 13-4 against the Bulls this season, clinching their first series win against them since 2019 (11-10)...as an Orioles affiliate, the Tides also clunched the best winning percentage against the Bulls was in 2016 (17-11, .607) and at worst will finish 13-8 (.619).
