COLUMBUS, Ohio - Griffin Conine's go-ahead home run in the seventh inning on Wednesday lifted the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp by the Columbus Clippers 4-2 at Huntington Park.
With the score tied at two in the seventh, Columbus (54-65, 21-24) starter Peyton Battenfield (0-5) walked Dane Myers. Conine followed by blasting a two-run shot to give Jacksonville (58-63, 26-21) a 4-2 advantage.
José Castillo worked a scoreless seventh in place of Jumbo Shrimp starter Edward Cabrera, who yielded only two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts against two walks in 5.2 innings. Eli Villalobos struck out three in a scoreless eighth and Anthony Maldonado pitched a shutout ninth for his seventh save.
The Jumbo Shrimp got on the board in the third. Jacob Amaya walked with one out and scored on Charles Leblanc's double. After a ground out, Leblanc came in on an RBI single from Troy Johnston, who extended his on-base streak to 24 games.
The Clippers only offense came in the fourth. Bryan Lavastida drew a leadoff walk. After a strikeout, Johnathan Rodriguez singled. Lavastida stole third and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Jhonkensy Noel. George Valera followed with an RBI single to even the score.
Jacksonville faces Columbus in the third game of the series in Thursday's 6:15 p.m. first pitch. RHP Chi Chi González (6-8, 6.00 ERA) starts for the Jumbo Shrimp against Clippers RHP Jerad Eickhoff (1-3, 6.75 ERA). Coverage begins at 6 p.m. on ESPN 690 and www.ESPN690.com.
