Pimentel Named Pitcher of the Week
June 8, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - On Wednesday, June 2, the Great Lakes Loons starting pitcher Elisaul Pimentel twirled a career-high nine strikeouts en route to leading his team to the 6-3 win over Quad Cities to become the Midwest League's Pitcher of the Week (5/31-6/6).
Pimentel allowed only two hits over six innings of scoreless baseball to improve his ERA to 2.52 (15ERx53.2IP). In the win, his third straight, he extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 18 innings over three games.
In 10 starts this season, the 21-year-old Dominican holds a 5-3 record and has tossed a team-high 62 strikeouts to 21 walks over 53.2 innings pitched. Last week, Pimentel emerged among the top five Midwest League pitchers in strikeouts and currently ranks seventh. Pimentel also ranks seventh in the league with a 1.01 WHIP, a pitching statistic that measures the average number of walks and hits a pitcher allows each inning.
Every week, the Midwest League selects one offensive player and one pitcher for its player of the week awards. The Great Lakes Loons have had a player selected in five of the eight weeks this season: Jerry Sands three times (4/8-4/18, 4/19-4/25, 5/3-5/9), Will Savage (5/17-5/23), and Pimentel this week.
Pimentel will try to continue his scoreless streak Tuesday, June 8, against the Burlington Bees as the Loons start a six-game road trip before returning to Dow Diamond to face the South Bend Silver Hawks on Tuesday, June 15.
The Great Lakes Loons are a fourth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
