
TinCaps buried early in 12-5 loss to Cougars

GENEVA, Ill. - The TinCaps gave up a season-high 21 hits in a 12-5 loss to the Kane County Cougars Tuesday at Elfstrom Stadium. Danny Payne went 2-for-5.
The Cougars, who entered the game with a league-worst .233 batting average, jumped out to an 8-0 lead through four innings before the TinCaps finally scored in the top of the 5th .
In the 1st , the Cougars piled up five hits, only two of which left the infield. Anthony Aliotti and Kent Walton stroked RBI hits and Mike Gilmartin lifted a sacrifice fly. Kane County scored another three runs in the 2nd , two coming on a bloop triple by Leonardo Gil.
TinCaps RHP Jerry Sullivan was chased after a season-low 1.2 innings, having allowed six runs on ten hits.
In the 3rd , Connor Crumbliss hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 7-0 game and a bases-loaded single by Rashun Dixon made it 8-0 in the 4th .
The TinCaps finally got on the board with a two-out rally in the 5th . After a walk by Wande Olabisi, Jonathan Galvez rocketed a double to left-center to cut the lead to 8-1. Kane County answered in the bottom of the 5th to make it 9-1.
In the 7th , Fort Wayne rallied with a four-run frame. Everett Williams, and Olabisi and Jeudy Valdez drilled RBI doubles to cut the deficit to 9-5, but that was the closest the TinCaps would get.
Kane County roared back with a three-run bottom of the 7th . After an Aliotti sacrifice fly, Gil pounded a two-run homer to make it 12-5.
Sullivan (5-3) took the loss, snapping his four-start win streak. Cougars RHP Murphy Smith (2-0) worked 6.1 innings to grab the win.
The TinCaps fell below .500 to 29-30. Kane County improved to 27-32.
The TinCaps continue the three-game series against the Cougars (Class-A Oakland Athletics) Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Fort Wayne LHP Mike Watt (2-4) goes to the mound against Cougars LHP Justin Marks (2-6).
