Clinton LumberKings News Release
Clinton, IA - Casey Frawley took center stage with a 2-for-3, five-RBI game as the Lake County Captains used a five-run sixth inning to send the Clinton LumberKings to an 8-2 loss in the first-ever meeting between the two clubs at Alliant Energy Field.
Frawley singled home Delvi Cid in the first inning as the Captains took a 1-0 lead on left-hander Jon Hesketh. Hesketh would battle back to strand runners at second and third in the inning, striking out Roberto Perez and Jeremie Tice.
The Kings tied the score in the bottom of the first against Lake County lefty Matt Packer. Nick Franklin reached on a fielding error by Packer and advanced on the pitcher's throwing error to first. Vinnie Catricala sliced a single to right to put runners at the corners, and Mario Martinez legged out a fielder's choice to score Franklin.
Martinez tripled to open the fourth and scored two batters later as Welington Dotel singled past the drawn-in infield for a 2-1 LumberKings' lead.
That one-run advantage would fail to stand up, however, as right-hander John Housey ran into trouble with two outs in the sixth. A hit by Kyle Smith coupled with a hit-by-pitch of Adam Abraham and walk to Greg Folgia loaded the bases. Cid bounced a potential inning-ending grounder to Franklin at short, but the ball ate him up for a run-scoring error. A bases-loaded walk to Bo Greenwell forced home the go-ahead run.
Frawley stepped to the plate again, this time with the bases full and two outs. He'd take a Housey pitch off the wall in left for a bases-clearing double, extending the Lake County lead to 6-2.
Housey (L, 4-1) saw his 14.0-inning scoreless streak snapped despite the fact that all five runs were unearned. Right-hander Taylor Lewis came on to finish the inning and would allow two more runs - including one on a solo homer by Greenwell - as the Kings fell behind, 8-2.
Packer (W, 4-3) gave up two runs, one earned over 5.1 innings to get the win for the Captains. Right-hander Tyler Sturdevant (H, 1) added 2.2 scoreless frames, and righty Jose Flores worked a scoreless non-save ninth.
Hesketh finished with a run on four hits over 5.0 innings and struck out seven, but did not receive a decision. Right-hander Brandon Josselyn also added a scoreless ninth inning.
Martinez was Clinton's leading hitter, going 2-for-4 with a double, triple, run scored and RBI. Dotel went 1-for-3 with the other Kings' RBI.
The LumberKings (32-26) continue the series against the Captains (39-19) with game two action tomorrow night at 7:00 PM. Right-hander Taylor Stanton (5-2, 3.31) makes his 12th appearance, ninth start for Clinton. Listen to the game on AM 1390 KCLN in Clinton or live on the web at 1390kcln.com.
