Loons Take First of Three from Bees

BURLINGTON, IA - Loons center fielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez drove in three runs on three hits and Great Lakes notched its third consecutive win, a 9-3 decision over the last-place Burlington Bees.

Elisaul Pimentel, who was named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week on Monday, surrendered two first inning runs to snap his scoreless innings streak at 18 1/3. But the right-hander did not allow any more scoring en route to his sixth win of the year. Rubby de la Rosa fired the final three frames for his fourth save of the season.

Trailing 2-0, the Loons struck for three third-inning runs. J.T. Wise led off the frame with a solo home run to left-center field, his third home run of the year. After a one-out single, Rafael Ynoa advanced to second on a balk, to third on a single by Christian Lara, and home on an error by right-fielder Rene Oriental. Cavazos-Galvez singled home Lara from second to snap a 2-2 tie and give the Loons the lead for good.

Angelo Songco added an RBI triple in the seventh for the Loons' fourth run.

Two innings later, the Loons broke the game open with five runs. Cavazos-Galvez drove in two with a double off reliever Mitch Hodge, who lost control with four walks in a wild ninth.

Brian Paukovitz (3-3) surrendered three runs in six innings for a quality start loss.

Every Loons starter reached base in the game and all sans Jaime Ortiz recorded a hit.

NOTES: Prior to the game, the Midwest League announced its rosters for the 2010 MWL All-Star game, June 22 in Fort Wayne. Seven Loons were selected to represent the Eastern Division squad - Lara, Jerry Sands, Will Savage, Songco, Luis Vasquez, Allen Webster and Ynoa. Lara will start at shortstop. Sands will be the starting first baseman. The seven all-stars ties and franchise record (set in 2009) and ties Cedar Rapids for the most selections in the league this year... The Loons are now a season-best 14 games over .500 (36-22) and are 20-8 on the road... With a win over Clinton, Lake County stays three games ahead of the Loons in the Eastern Division standings. Lansing lost to Peoria, extending the Great Lakes lead to 4 ½ games over the third-placeLugnuts... The Loons and Bees continue their three-game series Wednesday night beginning at 7:30pm. Right-hander Josh Wall (0-4, 3.81) seeks his first win of the year against Burlington righty Tyler Sample (2-3, 4.47). The game will be carried on ESPN 100.9-FM and online at Loons.com.
