Kernels Take Two Steps Closer to Playoffs with 6-2 Win over Whitecaps
June 8, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels took two steps closer to clinching a MWL Western Division playoff berth with a 6-2 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps at Perfect Game Field on Tuesday night. The win, coupled with losses by Quad Cities and Clinton gives the Kernels a three game edge over the River Bandits and a five game lead over Clinton with 12 games to play.
The Kernels erased a 2-0 Whitecap lead with six unanswered runs, including a five run third inning. Casey Haerther went 3-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored and Michael Wing was 2-4 with a triple and 2 RBI as the Kernels outhit West Michigan, 10-5. Matt Long and Justin Bass both added an RBI.
Kernels starter Ariel Pena (1-1) allowed two runs on four hits, walked five and struck out five over six innings for the win. Buddy Boshers, Jon Bachanov and David Carpenter combined for three scoreless innings out of the Kernels bullpen.
West Michigan starter Jade Todd (0-7) allowed six runs on six hits over 2.2 IP. Jamie Johnson was 1-4 with an RBI and Avisail Garcia was 1-3 with an RBI.
The win reduces the Kernels âMagic Number' to clinch a playoff berth to 8 and drops the number to win the MWL West to 10. Any combination of Kernel wins and losses by the second and/or third place teams will reduce the number. The Kernels are 37-21 in the first half as West Michigan falls to 23-35.
Game two between the Kernels and Whitecaps is scheduled for 6:35 pm with the gates opening at 5:30 pm. It's a Mix 96.5 FM/WMT AM 600 Winning Wednesday where a lucky Kernels fan, age 18 and older, could win $10,000 if the Kernels complete a certain feat in the correct inning.
