Four Hawks Named to All-Star Roster
June 8, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - The Midwest League has announced the rosters for the 2010 All-Star Game in Fort Wayne, Indiana and four Silver Hawks players have earned the honors of playing in the mid-summer classic. Infielders Matt Davidson and Chris Owings will join pitchers Charles Brewer and Eric Smith as representatives from South Bend on the Eastern Division All-Stars.
The Midwest League All-Star game is being played at Parkview Field on June 22nd. The field staff for the Fort Wayne TinCaps will head up the Eastern Division All-Stars, while the staff from the Burlington Bees will lead the Western Division squad.
Davidson has played in every game except one for the Silver Hawks in 2010, providing a big bat in the middle of the lineup. Davidson leads the team in all three triple crown categories, batting .300 with 34 RBIs and seven home runs (tied with Bobby Borchering for team home run lead).
Owings, the youngest player on the Silver Hawks roster at 18, continues to shine both at the plate and in the field. Owings is batting .297 with five homers and 26 RBIs, while committing just 10 errors - the second fewest for starting shortstops in the Midwest League.
Brewer ranks second in the MWL with a 1.61 ERA and leads the team with 67 strikeouts. However, the right hander from UCLA has not received a lot of support this season, as his record is only 3-4 despite the low ERA.
Finally, Smith is the team leader with five wins and has lowered his ERA to 2.50. Smith was a second round draft pick last year from the University of Rhode Island and earlier this season threw 23.1 consecutive scoreless innings.
While no Silver Hawks player was elected to start the game, all should see some time off the bench. Starting pitchers are still to be determined based on rotation turns and pitch counts, so there is a possibility that Brewer or Smith could get the starting nod.
The Silver Hawks begin a 10-day, nine game road trip tonight in Davenport, Iowa against the Quad Cities River Bandits. The team returns home on Friday, June 18th for Coach Brian Kelly Night and fireworks after the game.
