June 8, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Davenport, IA - South Bend starter Charles Brewer (WP, 4-4) continued his dominance of the Midwest League, throwing 6.0 shutout innings to lead the Silver Hawks to a 3-0 shutout win over the Quad Cities River Bandits on Tuesday evening. The victory marks the Silver Hawks fourth shutout win of 2010.

Brewer struck out five in his latest gem, lowering his ERA to 1.45 on the season - ranking second in the Midwest League. He walked three and scattered three hits to even his record at 4-4 this season.

Randy Rodriguez (ND) continued the shutout effort by tossing two scoreless frames, followed by Yonata Ortega (SV, 12) who bounced back from a rough Sunday outing by recording a 1-2-3 ninth for his 12th save of the season.

The Silver Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second against Quad Cities starter Jorge Rondon (LP, 2-4). David Nick led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a ground out. After a strikeout, Tyson Van Winkle bounced a ball towards center field. Shortstop Ryan Jackson fielded it cleanly, but his throw was errant allowing Nick to score an unearned run and the Silver Hawks to take a 1-0 lead.

South Bend added a second run in the fifth inning, but felt they could have had more. Andrew Fie led off with a double, moving to third on a one out single by Chris Owings. Bobby Borchering then blooped a single into shallow left for the RBI, making it 2-0 and tying Matt Davidson for the team lead with his 34th RBI. With two outs, David Nick was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but the Hawks left them full and stranded a total of seven runners through the first five innings.

The Silver Hawks scored against the second half of the Quad Cities tandem rotation when Michael Blazek (ND) was brought in from the bullpen. With one out in the seventh, Owings singled deep in the hole to short, moving to second on a balk. After Bobby Borchering reached on the third River Bandits error of the game, Owings scored from third on a wild pitch to give the Silver Hawks a 3-0 cushion.

The two teams continue the three game series with game two Wednesday night at 8:00 PM Eastern Time. RHP Eric Smith (5-3, 2.50 ERA) goes for his sixth win for South Bend against Quad Cities RHP Shelby Miller (1-3, 5.12 ERA), who is considered the Cardinals top prospect according to Baseball America. Pregame coverage begins at 7:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
