Bees Hang Tight Until Five-Run Ninth

Burlington Bees News Release
Burlington, IA (June 8, 2010) - The Burlington Bees received another quality start from newly-named Western Division All-Star Bryan Paukovits on Tuesday night, but the bullpen took some punishment late in a 9-3 loss to the Great Lakes Loons at Community Field.
The Loons sent ten batters to the plate in a five-run ninth inning that put the game out of reach. Brian Cavazos-Galvez and J.T. Wise each had two RBI in the frame, and Bees reliever Mitch Hodge issued four free passes.
The Loons led by only one, however, heading to the ninth inning. The two teams traded runs in the seventh inning, with the Great Lakes score coming when Angela Songco tripled to the gap in right-center with two outs and a runner on third. The Bees answered in the bottom half with an extra-base RBI hit of their own. Gerard Hall scored from first when Joey Lewis drilled a double to left-center to reduce the Burlington deficit to one once again.
At that point, the Loons had led since scoring three off of Paukovits (L, 3-3) in the top of the third, an inning that included a J.T. Wise solo homer and another RBI from Cavazos-Galvez. That was the only inning in which Paukovits allowed a run, as he lasted six innings, allowing the three runs on six hits with four strikeouts for his team-high fifth quality start.
The Loons' crooked number came after the Bees took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Hall tripled and scored on a Deivy Batista sacrifice fly to end Great Lakes starter Elisaul Pimentel's (W, 6-3) string of 18 consecutive scoreless innings. A second run came home when Loons third baseman Brian Ruggiano failed to handle a routine pop-up at third that would have ended the inning.
The Bees take on Great Lakes again on Wednesday for another Kids Eat Free Wednesday at Community Field. First pitch will come at 6:30 with gates opening at 5:30. If you can not make it to the ballpark, listen in at GoBees.com or turn your dial to News Radio 1490 KBUR for the Casebine Community Credit Union Pregame Show starting at 6:10.
