Norfolk silences Lehigh Valley on Tuesday

(Norfolk, VA) - Norfolk Tides (57-66) starting pitcher Bruce Zimmermann (4-2) pitched extremely well on Tuesday evening against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (68-56). He pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings, while giving up just three hits and striking out eight batters in a 5-0 win. Dalton Guthrie, Yairo Munoz, and Johan Camargo provided the only hits for Lehigh Valley.

Norfolk took a 1-0 lead against Bubby Rossman (3-2) in the bottom of the third inning as Greg Cullen stole home. Rossman allowed just one run over three innings in a spot start for Lehigh Valley. The Tides took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning against Trevor Bettencourt as Brett Phillips hit a sacrifice fly that would score Kelvin Gutierrez. Bettencourt allowed just one run in one inning pitched in his triple-A debut.

The Tides extended their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning against Michael Kelly as Joseph Ortiz hit an RBI double that would score Gunnar Henderson. Ortiz struck again in the bottom of the seventh inning against Ofreidy Gomez as he hit an RBI single to score Henderson.

Brett Phillips homered against Erik Miller in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Norfolk a 5-0 lead. Miller has given up a home run in his last four appearances for Lehigh Valley. DL Hall pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of Zimmermann. He issued just one walk and recorded one strikeout.

The IronPigs and Tides continue their series on Wednesday evening at Harbor Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
