Iowa Cubs News Release
COLUMBUS, OH - The Iowa Cubs (57-67) allowed just five hits, shutting out the Columbus Clippers (71-51) by a score of 4-0 to take game one of the series, Tuesday at Huntington Park.
Iowa opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning on a two-run single by John Hicks followed by a sacrifice fly from Alexander Canario.
Three runs is all Iowa's staff would need as they spun just their seventh shutout victory of the year, led off by Wyatt Short. For his second consecutive start, Short spun five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out five.
He was followed by Kirvin Castro who made his Iowa Cubs debut, throwing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Iowa got an insurance run in the seventh inning when Brennen Davis hit a solo home run in his first game off the injured list, bringing the score to 4-0.
Dakota Mekkes and Nicholas Padilla combined to finish the final 2.1 innings, allowing just two base runners over that span.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- In his first game back from the injured list, Brennen Davis clubbed a solo home run in the seventh inning. It was his third home run of the year for the outfielder and first since April 19 at Louisville.
- Iowa struck out 16 times tonight, just one shy of their season-high 17 set back on May 8 at St. Paul. Seven different players all struck out multiple times, led by Narciso Crook and John Hicks each with three.
Iowa and Columbus will play game two of their six game series tomorrow night, with first pitch from Huntington Park is set for 5:15 CT. For more information and tickets, visit www.iowacubs.com.
