Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - An early third period goal by David Gilbert proved to be the game winner as the Wheeling Nailers (4-3-0-0) narrowly defeated the Cincinnati Cyclones (4-2-0-0) by a 4-3 final score in front of 5,062 at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night.
The Nailers opened the scoring at 8:30 when Tyler Murovich snapped a shot past Sam Brittain (L, 14 saves, 2-1-0-0) from the right circle to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Then, just before the break, Wheeling added another lamplighter to their totals as Zack Torquato finished off an odd man rush to give his team a two-goal edge through 20 minutes.
The Cyclones got on the board at 10:03 of the middle period as Shayne Taker blasted in a point shot past Franky Palazzese (W, 22 saves, 4-3-0-0) to pull his team to within one. Wheeling wasted little time regaining their two goal cushion as Matia Marcantuoni fed Chaz Johnson in front of the net, who guided the puck into the net at 11:10. Moments later, though, the Cyclones answered right back; Michael Neal burst into the slot and fired home his second goal of the season to make it 3-2. Then, with just 1:39 left in the stanza, a rebound left out in front by Palazzese was pounced on by David MacDonald, who slid in the game-tying strike. The second period ended with a 3-3 deadlock.
Unfortunately, the Nailers would take their final lead of the game just 2:12 into the third period as David Gilbert lit the lamp for the fourth time this season, with the assists going to Ben Blood and Riley Brace. The Cyclones pulled Brittain in the final minute in an attempt to tie it with the extra skater, but to no avail as Wheeling held on to capture a 4-3 win.
The Cyclones will close out their three-game weekend on the road tomorrow evening when they visit the Toledo Walleye at 5:15pm ET. Fans can hear all the action of the game on the Cyclones Radio Network beginning at 4:55pm and can watch the game at the Game Time Sports Bar and Grill!
The Cyclones will be back on the ice at U.S. Bank Arena on Thursday, November 13 when they play host to the Orlando Solar Bears at 7:30pm! It will be the first Thirsty Thursday featuring $1 beers, plus, we'll pay homage to the cult classic movie "Dumb and Dumber." Call 513.421.PUCK to secure your seats and for more details.
