Hats Flying Everywhere

The Wheeling Nailers saw their season record even at 3-3-0 on Friday night, when they fell 6-3 to the Evansville IceMen at Ford Center. While offense was the story of the game, the majority of the goals came from two players. Matia Marcantuoni made his Wheeling debut, after playing the first eight games of the campaign with the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Marcantuoni tallied all three goals for the Nailers, making him the second player on the team to record a hat trick this season. On the other side of the sheet, Evansville's Dylan Bell also brought down the hats, as he dented the twine three times, with two of his goals coming in the third period.

Better Showing for the Home Fans

The Cincinnati Cyclones played just their second home game of the 2014-15 season on Friday night, and the end result was significantly different than the first. After dropping an 8-2 decision to the Kalamazoo Wings in their home opener, Cincinnati bounced back with a 3-1 victory over the Indy Fuel, as the Fuel mustered just 17 shots on goal. The contest was deadlocked 1-1 at the start of the third period, but a shorthanded goal by Byron Froese put the Cyclones ahead, and Stephan Vigier added a marker with six seconds left for the 3-1 final. Froese also had an assist on Josh Shalla's goal, while Rob Madore snared his second win of the season, making 16 saves.

Shorthanded Specialists

For the second game in a row, Wheeling's penalty kill faced a pair of tough challenges, as Evansville received a pair of two-man advantages on Friday night. The first 5-on-3 lasted for 1:27, while the second one went for the full two minutes, as the Nailers battled their way through without surrendering a power play goal. Instead, they turned the tables against the IceMen, as Matia Marcantuoni's second tally of the night was a shorthanded goal, which occurred when Wheeling was playing just one man down. The Nailers have scored two shorthanded goals this season, while allowing only two power play goals in 28 such situations. Wheeling's power play is currently 4-for-20.

Calling All Cyclones

Cincinnati enters Saturday's tilt with a 4-1-0 record, but has had some its recent success, despite seeing some of its top players join American Hockey League clubs. Leading scorers Joe Basaraba (3-5-8) and Andrew Yogan (2-5-7) are both currently members of the San Antonio Rampage, along with Wade Megan who had two goals in two games. Meanwhile, it took forward David Pacan just one game to earn himself a look with the Norfolk Admirals. Since all of those transcations took place, the Cyclones added a familiar face to their roster, signing former Nailer and Cincinnati native, Christiaan Minella. However, Minella is not expected to play in Saturday night's game.

The Rivalry Gets Shortened

Saturday night marks the first of four head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Cyclones this season, as well as the first of two at US Bank Arena. Last season, Wheeling and Cincinnati collided on 12 different occasions, with each team skating away with six victories and 13 points. The 2013-14 season series ended with the two sides exchanging victories, although a +2 goal differential that weekend gave the Nailers a slight edge for the year. Even play is nothing new for these two clubs, as Wheeling has won 54 of the 107 historical match-ups. The next game between the teams takes place on January 3rd, while fans at WesBanco Arena will have to wait until February 7th to see the Cyclones come to town.
