Warriors Too Bright for Solar Bears on Saturday
November 8, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Orlando, FL - Kyle Jean scored twice on Saturday as the Greenville Road Warriors (5-3-0-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, defeated the Orlando Solar Bears (3-4-2-0) in a 6-3 final at the Amway Center. The Road Warriors have now earned five victories in their last six games.
Goaltender Jason Missiaen (2-0-0-0) stopped 25 of the 28 shots he faced for his second win in as many appearances this season. Along with Jean (2g), Emerson Clark (1g, 1a), Chris McCarthy (1g, 1a), Michael Kantor (1g, 1a) and Michael St. Croix (2a) also notched a multi-point night.
The Solar Bears struck first at 6:54 of the opening frame when Mickey Lane touched the puck to Blake Kessel, who gained the blue line on a 2-on-1 rush. With little time to act, Kessel fed the puck across to Greg Miller who knocked home a one-timer for his third goal of the season.
The Road Warriors came out firing in the second and took their first lead of the season-series with back-to-back goals just 35 seconds apart in the middle frame. At the 1:02 mark, Kantor found Jean on another 2-on-1 rush, who punched home a one-timer. Seconds later, Brendan Rempel, in his Road Warriors debut, ripped a slap shot from the point that was deflected at the doorstep by Tyler Brown past Orlando goaltender Maxime Clermont. The goal was Brown's first of the year, while St. Croix notched an assist and extended his point streak to five games.
As the pendulum continued to swing, the Solar Bears evened the game on the power play just 1:01 into the third when Brock Montgomery recorded his first goal of the year. From below the goal line, Ryan Rupert fed the puck to the slot where Montgomery sent a one-timer past Missiaen with St. Croix in the box for cross checking.
Just over two minutes later, Clark intercepted a pass in the Orlando zone and skated through the slot before firing a top-shelf wrist shot for a 4-3 Road Warriors advantage at the 3:15 mark. The Solar Bears answered at 10:37 when Greg Miller backhanded a shot on target that deflected high in the air, then bounced past Missiaen as he was bumped into by a scrum in front.
The Road Warriors took the lead for good at 12:51 of the third when Chris McCarthy entered the zone on the left side and fired a wrist shot past Clermont from the top of the circle. Greenville extended its lead on the power play at the 17:54 mark when Jean netted his second of the game and team-leading fifth of the season on a one-timer from the back door. Kantor finished the scoring in his ECHL season debut with an empty netter at 19:20 to make it 6-3.
The Road Warriors finished the game 1-for-2 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill. Clermont (0-1-0-0) made 25 saves and suffered the loss.
Greenville outshot Orlando 31-28.
The Road Warriors return to the ice tomorrow for a 1:00 p.m. rematch against Orlando. The next home game takes place Monday, Nov. 10 with another battle against South Carolina.
