Wheeling Nailers News Release

CINCINNATI, OH- Clark Donatelli has had plenty of thrilling moments in his four-year career as the head coach of the Wheeling Nailers, and on Saturday night, he added one more to the list. David Gilbert broke a 3-3 tie at the 2:14 mark of the third period, as one of four different players to light the lamp, as the Nailers held off the Cincinnati Cyclones, 4-3 at US Bank Arena. The win was the 100th of Donatelli's career.

The Nailers did their best to take the crowd out of the game early, potting a pair of goals in the first period. The first tally came at the 8:30 mark, when Chaz Johnson battled the puck into the offensive zone at the blueline. Tyler Murovich sprinted onto the loose biscuit, snapping in a shot from the right circle for his first of the season. After successfully killing a pair of penalties, Wheeling added to its edge in the final minute. Derek Army entered the zone with a pass to Sahir Gill on his left. Gill proceeded to slide a pass through to Zack Torquato, who powered in a one-timer from the right side.

Midway through the second period, Cincinnati started to plot a comeback. Shayne Taker wristed in a power play goal from the middle of the blueline at the 10:03 mark, which temporarily cut the Wheeling lead to one. However, 1:07 later, the Nailers went back on top by two, as Riley Brace won an icing race, allowing Matia Marcantuoni to set up Chaz Johnson at the top of the crease for a 3-1 advantage. The Cyclones eventually tied the game in the middle frame, as Michael Neal roofed a shot from the slot at 12:44, before David MacDonald shuffled in a loose puck with 1:39 remaining, after Kevin Sullivan beat out an icing call the other way.

Wheeling had still yet to trail in the contest, and 2:14 into the third period, the visitors regained their lead. Ben Blood bombed a slap shot from the left point, which was redirected into the cage by David Gilbert for his team-leading fourth goal of the campaign. Cincinnati peppered the Nailers' net with 12 shots in the final stanza, but none of them turned on the red light, as Wheeling won, 4-3.

Franky Palazzese stopped all 12 shots he faced in the third period, and ended up with 22 saves on 25 shots in the win for Wheeling. Sam Brittain took the loss for Cincinnati, giving up four goals on 18 shots.

The Nailers will return home to WesBanco Arena on Sunday for a 4:05 game against the Indy Fuel. For tickets and more information, call (304) 234-GOAL.
