Gladiators Come from Behind, Edge Blades 3-2
November 8, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Atlanta Gladiators News Release
DULUTH, Ga. - In front of just over 6,000 fans, the largest crowd yet this season, the Gladiators (4-3-0-0) got a hard-fought, come-from-behind win in a brutal matchup against the Florida Everblades (6-2-0-1), 3-2. Brenden Walker scored the game-winning goal and Adam Brown stopped 19 of the 21 shots he faced.
The Gladiators came out with a plan against the Everblades in the first period, keeping them to only four shots on goal, matching the lowest amount the Glads have allowed in any period. On the other end of the ice, Gwinnett had a handful of odd-man rushes, but could not seem to beat Florida goaltender, Daniel Altshuller, pelting him with 13 shots in the first.
As the palpable tension between these two grew, the Everblades struck first in the second period at 3:47 off the stick of Mike Little. The second goal of the period also came from the opposing "ËBlades, when Jason Wilson scored backdoor, just behind Gwinnett goalie, Adam Brown at 9:31.
However, the Gladiators, who were 0-3 when allowing the first goal and when trailing in any game this year, refused to let this deficient stand. On their second power play of the night, Jordon Southorn composed the puck at the top of the slot, and shot it over to a waiting Garry Nunn deep on the left wing, who ripped a one-timer through the slot, off the stick of Marshall Everson, and past Altshuller at 14:52. Just minutes later, the Gladiators tied-up the game at 17:50 after J.P. Labardo received the puck just above the slot from Anthony Perdicaro. On a brilliant spin move, Labardo sent a bullet into the net.
Both teams came out onto the ice in third period, hungry to break up the tie. The Gladiators, as they have done all year, cashed in off of a turnover in their opponent's end of the ice. Off a misplay in the neutral zone, Casey Pierro-Zabotel picked the puck off of an Everblades player, and threaded the pass off to a wide-open Brenden Walker just outside the far side of crease, and he buried the winning goal into the net under the crossbar.
The Gladiators travel to South Carolina to take on the Stingrays at 3:05 p.m. tomorrow for only their second away game of the season. The next time the team will be back in North Georgia will be on Sunday, November 16th for the third annual "Stache Bash" against the same Everblades.
