KALAMAZOO - It was a different night, but the same hero for the Kalamazoo Wings, as
Alex Mallet recorded the shootout game-winner giving the K-Wings a 2-1 victory Saturday night against the Elmira Jackals on Military Night presented by AmeriFirst Home Mortgage.
A night prior it was Mallet's heroics that seized a win over Elmira with 20.6 seconds remaining. On Saturday Mallet secured the K-Wings' first shootout victory of the season.
Scoreless through 20 minutes, the K-wings broke the gridlock midway in the second period, when Matt Caria (2nd) tipped in a Sam Ftorek rebound past Travis Fullerton.
Forcing overtime the Jackals evened the score midway through the third stanza with a power play goal from Justin Kea (2nd). Camped out in front of the net Kea redirected a Steven Shamenski centering pass.
After being stopped through the first two rounds of the shootout, the K-Wings found the back of the net as Mallet used a deked and lifted the puck past Fullerton. Adding insurance Nathan Longpre ended the game with a wrister in the fifth round.
Joel Martin (5-2-1-0) earned his fifth victory of the season stopping 19 shots in regulation and overtime. In the shootout, Martin turned aside all four shots he faced.
