Nailers Point Streak Ends in Kalamazoo
March 25, 2016 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
KALAMAZOO, MI- The Wheeling Nailers had the improbable happen to them on Friday night, as their 11-game point streak came to an end at Wings Event Center. After jumping out to a 3-0 lead, the Nailers surrendered six straight goals, and ultimately fell, 6-4.
For the third consecutive week, the Nailers got off to a terrific start against Kalamazoo, building a 2-0 lead in goals, while holding a large advantage in the shots department. The first tally came at the 3:40 mark. Cody Wydo poked the puck away at his own blueline, leading John McCarron and Riley Brace on a 2-on-1. McCarron kept the puck to himself, sniping a wrist shot into the right side of the net. The second marker came with 2:23 to go. Jordan Kwas won an offensive zone face-off back to James Melindy, who teed up a slap shot from the right point, drilling it home.
Wheeling upped its lead to three at the 5:50 mark of the middle frame. Connor Leen stole a puck which was swung around the right wall, before centering a pass to Anton Zlobin in the slot. Zlobin walked into the feed, clobbering a shot off of the crossbar and into the goal. As the period went on, the Wings began to make a comeback, pulling to within one. At the 9:30 mark, Tanner Sorenson took a shot from the top of the left circle, which was tipped in by Eric Kattelus. Then, with under 30 seconds to go, Ludwig Blomstrand drilled in a one-timer from the right face-off dot for a power play tally.
Unfortunately for the Nailers, the end of the second was a sign of things to come in the third, as they had one of their more forgettable periods of the season. 2:23 in, Kalamazoo got the equalizer, when Justin Taylor redirected Ben Wilson's point shot into the left side of the net. The home squad had a goal waved off moments later, but proceeded to kill a penalty, and build on it by going ahead for the first time all night. David Gilbert floated a pass across to Alex Mallet, who finished the odd-man rush with the tally. 2:28 later, Lane Scheidl completed a break with Taylor, upping the advantage to two. With 7:24 remaining, Blomstrand netted the sixth consecutive goal for the Wings, before Riley Brace's power play tally cut the deficit to two in a 6-4 final score.
Joel Martin bounced back to get his 30th win of the year for Kalamazoo, making 29 saves on 33 shots. Brian Foster's personal six-game point streak came to an end for Wheeling, as he fell victim of six goals on 32 shots.
The Nailers and Wings will finish their weekend series as well as the season set on Saturday at 7:00. Wheeling will then return home for two games on April 1st and 2nd. Friday the 1st is Duck Dynasty Night Starring Si Robertson, in addition to Biker Night Presented by Harley Davidson. The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders will be at the game on the 2nd, sponsored by Miller Lite.
