Norfolk Admirals News Release

Norfolk, Va. - The Norfolk Admirals halted Orlando's three-game win streak Friday night at Scope Arena, as they defeated the Solar Bears in a 4-3 shootout victory.

Steven Whitney picked up his 20th goal of the season just 39 second into regulation, jumpstarting the momentum that would carry through the first period. Robbie Czarnik took the puck behind Orlando's net, and his attempt to stuff the puck in steered wide, landing on the stick of Alexis Loiseau. As Solar Bear goaltender, Rob Madore, failed to cover up Loiseau's quick shot, Whitney was there to poke it through Madore's glove and into the net.

Just 21 seconds later, the Admirals put another one on the board. Braden Christoffer widened their lead after he cut across Madore's crease and deked. His backhander evaded Madore and doubled Norfolk's lead, 2-0. This is the 17th game in which Norfolk burst out to a 2-0 lead, and the 14th game where they had a 2-0 advantage in the first frame.

Orlando answered on the power play at 10:18 of the first. A shot from the left point from Denver Manderson found Rylan Schwartz's stick, which gave him the opportunity for a tip in, glove side of Nic Riopel. His goal cut the Admirals lead in half, 2-1.

Norfolk took back their two-goal advantage during a power play of their own. As Nicklas Lindberg sat in the box for holding, Whitney grabbed his second goal of the night at 13:29.

After a fiesty and scoreless second frame, the Solar Bears came alive in the final period. Winger Johnny McInnis' and Eric Baier scored two goals just over one minute apart, tying the game late in the third period.

Baier's game-tying goal launched the game into a 3-on-3 sudden death extra session. With 1:30 remaining in overtime, forward Danick Gauthier notched his third goal as an Admiral and the game winner that led Norfolk to victory.
