Manchester Monarchs News Release
READING P.A. - The Manchester Monarchs received two goals from Steven Hodges but couldn't hold a pair of two-goal leads, and fell to the Reading Royals, 4-3, Friday night at Santander Arena.
The Monarchs (37-21-4-5) drop to 4-6-0-0 in the season series with the Royals (33-24-5-4), the only team in the ECHL Manchester holds a losing record against.
Manchester opened the scoring when Hodges scored his 2nd goal of the season at 11:31 of the first period. Michael Boivin started the play with a shot that Reading goaltender, Adam Morrison, saved, but the rebound fell right to the stick of Troy Power. Power then beat Morrison and hit the post, but Hodges was in good position to bang the rebound home, giving the Monarchs a 1-0 lead.
Hodges continued his big night, giving the Monarchs a 2-0 lead at 4:30 of the second period. After a fierce forecheck by Power, a turnover came directly to Hodges in the slot, and the Monarchs forward sent a wrister past the glove of Morrison for his second goal of the night.
Reading cut the Manchester lead in half when Kevin Goumas scored his 7th goal of the season at 6:01 of the second period. Goumas entered the Monarchs zone on the left half-boards, skated to the dot, and fired a wrister past the glove shoulder of Monarchs goaltender, Colin Stevens, making the game, 2-1.
Zac Larraza put the Monarchs up, 3-1, when he scored his 17th goal of the season. Boivin sent Larraza on a breakaway with a clearing attempt from his own goal-line, and Larraza made a forehand-to-backhand move on Morrison, beating the Reading goaltender at 10:24 of the second period.
The Royals cut into the Monarchs lead again when Yannick Tifu scored his 15th goal of the season at 12:20 of the middle period. Tifu sent a sharp-angle shot from the left of Stevens that the goaltender stopped, but the puck bounced straight into the air. On the clearing attempt by Mark Anthoine, the puck was knocked into the net, making the score, 3-2.
The Royals leveled the score when Joe Rehkamp netted his 4th tally of the season at 13:05 of the second period. Rehkamp went in on a 2-on-1 with Joey Sides, and finished on a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle to bring the Royals all the way back from their second two-goal deficit of the night.
Reading took their first lead of the game at 6:52 of the final frame on the 6th goal of the season from Kevin Young. While on the power play, Young completed a tic-tac-toe passing play with a one-timer from the left circle, beating Stevens who had no chance on the play, making the game, 4-3.
Manchester would put pressure on the Royals late in the game with Stevens pulled for an extra attacker, but couldn't solve Morrison for a fourth time.
The Monarchs are back in action Saturday night (7 p.m.), when they visit Glens Falls, N.Y. to take on the Adirondack Thunder in a crucial East Division matchup.
Notes
Steven Hodges recorded his first career multi-goal game
Michael Boivin recorded his 30th point of the season on Larraza's goal
Josh Brown made his return to the Monarchs after being loaned by the Portland Pirates.
