All-Time Series: Nailers 1, Fuel 0

All-Time Series at Fairgrounds Coliseum: First Meeting

Two Games, Same Night

The Wheeling Nailers suffered their first home loss of the 2014-15 regular season on Friday night, as the Orlando Solar Bears came from behind for a 6-3 victory at WesBanco Arena. Wheeling got off to a fast start in the game with Matia Marcantuoni's goal 58 seconds in, before Max MacKay and Derek Army scored in the second period, building a 3-1 advantage. Ryan Rupert's tally brought Orlando within one during the middle frame, and from there, the Solar Bears turned the tilt completely around, denting the twine four times in the third period, including a goal by former Nailer Denver Manderson. Kent Patterson defeated Franky Palazzese in the goaltending match-up.

Slowing Down the Schedule

The Indy Fuel wasted little time in getting its first season in team history started, playing eight games during the first three weeks of the campaign. Since then, Indy has taken the ice only twice, dropping back-to-back road contests last weekend against the Cincinnati Cyclones on Friday (3-1) and Wheeling Nailers on Sunday (4-3). The Fuel enter Saturday's contest with a 2-5-3 record, having played all but one game against North Division opponents. Both of Indy's victories have taken place at Fairgrounds Coliseum, as the Fuel has defeated Missouri and Evansville. This week's five-day layoff matches the longest stretches that Indy will have without a game in 2014-15.

Not Much Against the North

Although they are now members of the North Division, the Nailers will not see much of their divisional opponents during the first three months of the season. After locking horns with Evansville, Cincinnati, and Indy last weekend, Wheeling will play Indy on Saturday, accounting for the fourth divisional contest in 13 days. Aside from a December 10th home meeting against the Toledo Walleye, the Nailers will not face another North Division team until January 2nd, when they make their lone trip of the campaign to Fort Wayne. Wheeling will play 23 of its 28 divisional games during 2015, while playing just two games against the former South Division (East, minus ELM & REA).

Hartzell Has a Turn

Franky Palazzese has been the starting goaltender in each of Wheeling's first nine games this season, putting together a 5-4-0 record. However, on Saturday night, he will have the opportunity to take a breather, as Eric Hartzell receives the nod from Head Coach Clark Donatelli. Hartzell was previously with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins this season, winning both of his AHL starts. Palazzese was the final netminder in the ECHL to earn a decision in all of his team's games, after starting 60 of 68 games with the OHL's Sudbury Wolves last year. With Mac Carruth currently on the Rockford IceHogs roster, Cody Reichard will make his seventh appearance for the Fuel, bringing a 2-3-1 record into Saturday.

Inaugural Trip to Indy

Saturday night marks the second of four head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Fuel this season, as well as the first of two battles between the clubs at Fairgrounds Coliseum. Prior to this clash, Wheeling had only played six regular season games in the State of Indiana during its 23-year history, taking the ice three times in Evansville and three times in Fort Wayne. The Nailers won their first ever game against the Fuel on Sunday afternoon at WesBanco Arena, 4-3, thanks to three goals in the third period. Wheeling will not return to Indy again until March 7th.
