Pirates Recall Carey from the Glads

DULUTH, Ga. - The Portland Pirates announced that they have recalled forward Greg Carey from the Gwinnett Gladiators on Saturday. The rookie had played in five games for the Gladiators since his assignment to Gwinnett on November 1st.

Carey, 24, had a quiet first two games with the Gladiators, then burst out for four goals, including a natural hat trick against the South Carolina Stingrays on November 9th. He became only the fourth Gwinnett player in history to achieve either feat, and was the second to achieve both in the same game.

Carey then scored his fifth straight goal for the team on Thursday night along with an assist, and then added two more assists on Friday night. Before coming to North Georgia, Carey had played in five games with the Portland Pirates this year, totaling eight penalty minutes and a minus-1 rating.

Over the last two seasons the native of Hamilton, Ontario was consistently one of the best players in NCAA hockey. From 2010 to 2014, Carey played for St. Lawrence University, averaging over a point per game for the Saints - 185 points (84g, 101a) in 152 games played. In his junior and senior seasons, he also was a top-three finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given to the best player in college hockey.

Carey will join the Pirates in time for their game tonight in Portland. The Gladiators' next game will be this Sunday the 16th at The Arena at Gwinnett Center at 2:05 p.m. for the culmination of the month of "Movember" with the third annual "Stache Bash" against the Florida Everblades.
