Kansas City Mavericks News Release

Independence, MO (November 23, 2014) - The Missouri Mavericks (6-7-0-0) came from behind on Sunday to top the Central Division leading Quad City Mallards (7-3-2-2) by a 4-3 score in a shootout at the Independence Events Center. The Mavs won their first shootout of the season, 2-0, with David Rutherford and Lindsay Sparks scoring the goals.

Trailing 3-1 heading into the third period, the Mavericks played one of their best 20 minutes of the season scoring at 6:32 and at 19:09 of the final frame to tie the game and force it into overtime/shootout. Missouri outshot the Mallards 14-7 in the third period and had the only shot of the overtime (2).

"This was a huge win for us," said Missouri Head Coach Richard Matvichuk. "Everyone had their heads up the entire game and showed their character by coming back to get this "˜w'. Scoring the one power play goal let everyone relax and it carried to another later in the game."

Mike Clemente made 29 saves putting an end to his personal three-game losing streak. Clemente is now 2-4 on the season and he stopped all four shooters he faced in the shootout.

Josh Brittain, acquired by the Mavs from Kalamazoo earlier in the week, scored two goals in the game including the game-tying strike with just 51 seconds remaining in regulation that ultimately gave his team a chance in extra time. Brittain now has three goals in his three games with the Mavs.

Andrew Courtney scored the other goal for Missouri, his second of the season, pulling his club to within a goal, 3-2, in the third period.

Brittain's first goal of the game countered Quad City's Kevin Baker's goal in the first period making the score 1-1 after 20 minutes. In the second period, the Mallards took control with goals from Justin Fox and Antti Pusa making the count 3-1 after 40 minutes.

The third period comeback for the Mavs marks the second time in seven chances this season that have come back after trailing through two periods to earn the win (2-5).

A big positive from the game was that the Mavs converted two of five power play chances ending their slump with the man advantage. Entering the game, Missouri was 0 for their previous 17 on the power play. Brittain's first goal and Courtney's strike were both scored with the man advantage.

The loss moves the Mallards record to 5-0-2-2 in their last nine games.

Missouri is back in action on Wednesday night when they host the Allen Americans at the Independence Events Center. Face-off is scheduled for 7:05 PM (CST).
