Mavs Rally Overcome Mallards in Shootout
November 23, 2014 - ECHL (ECHL)
Quad City Mallards News Release
MOLINE, Ill. (November 23, 2014) - Sam Brittain's second goal of the night tied the game with 50 seconds left in regulation and David Rutherford and Lindsay Sparks scored in the shootout as the host Missouri Mavericks (6-7-0) rallied to defeat the Quad City Mallards (7-3-4) 4-3 in a shootout Sunday. By earning one point for the shootout loss the Mallards extended their regulation unbeaten streak to an ECHL season-best nine games (5-0-4).
The shootout goals from Rutherford and Sparks proved sufficient for the Mavericks after Missouri goaltender Mike Clemente- who had 29 saves in regulation and overtime- turned aside all four Mallard shooters.
The Mavericks forced overtime and the shootout by battling back from a 3-1 deficit with a pair of third period goals. Andrew Courtney cut the gap to 3-2 by scoring Missouri's second power play goal from close range at 6:32. Brittain provided the equalizer from the doorstep after Clemente was pulled for an extra attacker.
It was the Mallards who had struck twice in the second period. Quad City was up a man when Justin Fox- who also had an assist- converted Mario Lamoureux's centering pass to break a 1-1 tie at 12:33 of the second. Antti Pusa pounced on a rebound to stretch the Mallard lead to 3-1 at 16:02.
The Mallards first moved in front when Kevin Baker opened scoring by burying Fox's centering pass at 4:16 of the first period. The Mavericks were on the man advantage when Brittain erased the Mallard for the first time from the top of the left wing circle at 18:53 of the first.
The Mallards return to action on the road Wednesday night against the Wichita Thunder. The Mallards next play at home Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. against the Mavericks.
Tickets for all remaining Mallards regular season home games- including Saturday night's tilt- are on sale now at the iWireless Center box office, Ticketmaster outlets, ticketmaster.com and Ticketmaster charge-by-phone toll free at 1-800-745-3000 .
