Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Evansville, IN - The Greenville Road Warriors (10-7-0-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, dropped a 6-2 decision to the Evansville IceMen (6-7-0-1) in a physical contest on Sunday at the Ford Center.
The game included a season-high six fights including two from forward Shawn O'Donnell in the third period. Andrew Himelson, Ryan Hegarty, Sam Noreau and Spencer Humphries registered the other four tilts for the Road Warriors.
The loss snapped a two-game win streak and dropped Greenville to 6-6-0-0 on the road this season.
The Road Warriors opened the scoring at 14:34 of the first period when Noreau earned his first goal of the season. From the left side, Vinny Saponari fed the puck to Noreau at the top of the right circle, who corralled the puck and sent a slap shot through traffic and past Evansville goaltender Chris Driedger. Saponari and Trevor Parkes each notched an assist, the latter of which recorded his 100th professional point.
Evansville responded and grabbed its first lead of the game with a pair of goals just eight seconds apart late in the opening frame. At the 16:18 mark, Brandon Wong capitalized on a turnover in the Greenville zone for his fifth goal of the season. Peter Sakaris made it 2-1 when he finished a one-time redirection from the back door on a pass across from Matt Lowry at 16:26.
The IceMen extended their lead to 3-1 at 4:06 of the second period when Andre Bouvet-Morrissette was rewarded with an unintentional shot from the left circle that was redirected under Jason Missiaen's pads and in.
Saponari cut the deficit to one with his third goal in as many games at 8:58 of the middle frame. From the bottom of the right circle, Saponari walked to the side of the net and lifted a shot that trickled over Driedger's shoulder and across the goal line. The IceMen regained their two-goal lead just 26 seconds later when Kale Kerbashian netted his fifth goal of the season.
At the 12:19 mark of the third period, Zach Currie made it 5-2 when he joined an odd-man rush into the Greenville zone. Trailing the play, Currie grabbed a loose puck and buried it into a wide open net with Missiaen drawn out of position during the attack. Bouvet-Morrissette capped the scoring at 17:31 of the third period with a wrister from the high slot for his second goal of the game.
The Road Warriors finished the contest 0-for-4 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill. It was the first time this season Greenville has lost when scoring first (6-1-0).
Driedger made 25 saves and earned his third win of the season, while Missiaen stopped 20 shots and suffered the loss.
Greenville outshot Evansville 27-26.
