Evansville IceMen News Release
IceMen Kapow-ed By Batman clad Walleye TOLEDO, OH.-On superhero night in Toledo, the Evansville IceMen were upended by Toledo Walleye by a score of 6-2 in front of sell out crowd at the Huntington Center. Dressed as The Riddler, the IceMen, like Frank Gorshin or Jim Carrey had their plans foiled by the Batman jersey wearing Walleye (10-3-0-1, 21 points) as Evansville remains winless on the road.
Making his first professional start, Branden Komm made 34 saves on 40 Walleye chances. Toledo's Jeff Lerg stopped 24 shots as he picked up his second win of the season over the IceMen, who fall to 5-7-0-1 (11 points).
Just over two minutes into the game, the Walleye found the back of the net as Kyle Bonis scored on a point blank shot. Bonis' ninth goal of the year, from Marek Tverdon and Shane Berschbach, put the Walleye up 1-0 after one.
In the second period, the Walleye got a pair of breakaway goal in the first 6 minutes of the period. The goals from Anthony Luciani, and Tverdon gave the Walleye a 3-0 lead midway through the second frame.
After a slashing call on Toledo's Michael Leone, the IceMen power play went to work. Kale Kerbashian took a shot that was stopped by Lerg, but the rebound found Brandon Wong. The Victoria, BC native blasted in his fourth of the season to cut the Walleye lead to 3-1.
Less than 40 seconds later the Walleye answered with a Joel Chiounard goal. The Walleye added one more before the end of the period to carry a 5-1 lead into the second intermission.
Early in the third, the Walleye took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play. Bonis put in his second of the night to give the Walleye a five-goal cushion.
The rest of third turned into a fight fest as three brawls took place. Kerbashian dropped the gloves and hammered Leone to the ice. Kerbashian received a game misconduct for continuing the altercation.
Peter Sakaris duked it out with Troy Schwab, Sakaris popped Schwab with a couple of jabs before the referees intervened. Shortly after, Kevin Harvey brawled with Cody Lampl. Harvey landed a barrage of strikes before taking Lampl to the ice. The fight was Harvey's second of the night as he traded punches with Tyler Elbrecht in the second period.
With under a minute to go in the game, Sakaris found Harvey charging towards the net. Harvey fired in his third goal of the season to make it a 6-2 final.
