Almost a Comeback

The Wheeling Nailers came back to tie the Elmira Jackals for the second time in a row on Saturday night, but unfortunately were unable to turn it into a victory. Trailing 2-0 early in the second period, Nick D'Agostino rang in his first goal as a Nailer, before Zack Torquato answered another Elmira goal, making the score 3-2 after forty minutes of play. At the 4:56 mark of the third period, Max MacKay lit the lamp with a 5-on-3 goal, knotting things up at three. From there, the Jackals rebounded to take control, scoring three times in the final seven minutes, picking up a 6-3 victory on home ice. Bobby Shea picked up a point in his first game in a Wheeling uniform, while Riley Brace recorded his sixth multi-point game of the campaign.

Seidel the Sniper

The Elmira Jackals matched a season-high on Saturday, netting six goals in their 6-3 win over the Nailers. Three of those markers belonged to forward Mike Seidel, who tallied for the third, fourth, and fifth times this season, as part of a four-point night. Despite having only played in four games against Wheeling in his career, Seidel has been a thorn in the side, compiling five goals and six points in those contests. Allan McPherson and Steven Shamanski were also major factors on the scoresheet, with each player registering one goal and three assists. Travis Fullerton made 25 saves, improving his season record to 7-2-2.

Not an Enjoyable Parade

Over the course of the last three games, the Nailers have spent more time in the penalty box than they would like, facing 21 opposition power plays during that time. On Saturday night, Elmira capitalized on the man advantage, finding the back of the net on three of seven opportunities. However, Wheeling also connected for a power play goal, thanks to Max MacKay's marker in the third period. The Nailers enter Sunday with the 14th ranked power play in the ECHL (18.4%), while the Jackals currently sit in second place (23.7%). Wheeling's 24.42 penalty minutes per game are the most in the league.

Home Cooking on the Way

Through the weekend, the Nailers will have played only five games at WesBanco Arena, matching the Greenville Road Warriors for the fewest home games in the Eastern Conference. On the other side of the ice, the Jackals will already be playing their tenth home game on Sunday afternoon, trailing only the South Carolina Stingrays, who will play their 11th game at North Charleston Coliseum. The schedule will begin to turn as early as next weekend for Wheeling, who will play five consecutive tilts in the Ohio Valley and nine of 12 leading up to the holidays. After playing five more home games during the next two weeks, Elmira will play 12 of 14 games outside of New York, finishing in West Virginia on January 10th.

See You in the New Year

Sunday afternoon marks the third of 13 head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Jackals, as well as the second of six battles between the two clubs at First Arena. Throughout the eight-year all-time series, the home teams have had the upper hand, winning 46 of the 74 games (62.1%), including both matches in 2014-15. After Sunday's game, each of the next five clashes between the two sides will take place at WesBanco Arena from January 10th-March 14th, before four of the final five return to Elmira between March 20th-April 11th. Six of Wheeling's 14 wins at First Arena came in eight visits last season.
