Bridgeport Islanders News Release
Jeff Tambellini scored the lone goal for the Sound Tigers against his former team, the Manchester Monarchs but it was not enough as the Monarchs collected the victory, 5-1. This is the second time the Sound Tigers faced-off against the Monarchs, with the last time coming on December 22nd when Manchester defeated the Sound Tigers also by a score of 5-1.
Manchester took the 1-0 lead 15:15 into the first period when Brady Murray scored his 11th goal of the season, three seconds after Ben Walter came out of the penalty-box for a two-minute minor for goaltender interference. Lauri Tukonen fed a cross-ice pass to Murray at the right circle where he blasted a one-timer past Sound Tigers' starting goalie Mike Morrison. Jeff Liken also had an assist on the goal.
The Monarchs would make it 2-0 in the second period when Kevin Westgarth tipped his sixth goal of the season past Morrison. Drew Bagnall wristed a shot on net that Westgarth got his stick on at 13:46 into the middle frame. David Meckler also had an assist on the marker. About three minutes later, Manchester would take a three-goal lead when Josh Kidd scored his first goal of the season. Murray and Patrik Hersley had the helpers. Brian Boyle helped Manchester take a commanding 4-0 lead with less than a minute remaining in the period, chipping the puck over Morrison's right shoulder from low in the right circle. Tukonen and Troy Milan picked up assists on Boyle's rookie league leading, 29th goal of the season.
Tambellini would put the Sound Tigers on the board, snapping Monarch starting goalie Jonathan Quick's shutout bid with his 31st tally of the season. Ben Walter started the play in the Sound Tigers' zone sending a breakout pass to Mark Wotton at the top of the zone. Wotton moved the puck to Tambellini at the top of Manchester's zone and snapped a quick shot past Quick's blocker making the score 4-1.
Cliché would seal the win for the Monarchs with his tenth goal of the season with six minutes remaining in regulation time. Murray had the lone assist on the goal finishing the scoring at 5-1 in favor of Manchester.
Morrison finished the game with 30 saves on the 35 Monarch attempts while Quick earned the victory making 29 saves. The Sound Tigers finished 0-for-4 on the man-advantage and were 3-for-3 on the penalty-kill.
The Sound Tigers will travel home tonight to prepare for the Philadelphia Phantoms on Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
