Boyle, Purcell Named To AHL All-Rookie Team

MANCHESTER, NH - The American Hockey League announced today that Manchester Monarchs center Brian Boyle and right wing Teddy Purcell have been named to the 2007-08 AHL All-Rookie Team, as voted by AHL coaches, players and media in each of the league's 29 member cities.

The team consists of one goaltender, two defensemen and three forwards:

2007-08 AHL All-Rookie Team

Goaltender: John Curry, W-B/Scranton Penguins (34gp, 22-9-2, 2.16gaa, .916sv%, 3so)

Defenseman: Cody Franson, Milwaukee Admirals (69gp, 11+23=34pts., 8 PPG)

Defenseman: Alex Goligoski, W-B/Scranton Penguins (63gp, 9+21=30pts., +15)

Forward: Brian Boyle, Manchester Monarchs (67gp, 28+30=58pts., 6 GWG)

Forward: Teddy Purcell, Manchester Monarchs (63gp, 22+55=77pts., 12 PPG)

Forward: Bobby Ryan, Portland Pirates (48gp, 21+28=49pts., +9)

Each All-Rookie Team member will receive a custom designed crystal award in recognition of his selection to the 2007-08 AHL All-Rookie Team.

2007-08 AHL All-Rookie Team

John Curry, Goaltender (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins):

In his first year out of Boston University, where he was the Hockey East Player of the Year, a First Team All-American and a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as a senior in 2006-07, John Curry has a record of 22-9-2 in 34 appearances for the first-place Penguins this season. Curry ranks fourth overall in the AHL with a 2.16 GAA and second among rookies in save percentage (.916) and shutouts (3), and had a personal eight-game winning streak from Mar. 2-19. The 23-year-old native of Shorewood, Minn., earned the Rbk Edge/AHL Rookie of the Month award for December.

Cody Franson, Defense (Milwaukee Admirals):

A third-round draft choice by the Nashville Predators in 2005, Cody Franson leads all AHL rookie defensemen with 11 goals, 23 assists and 34 points in 69 games for Milwaukee this season. The 20-year-old native of Salmon Arm, B.C., helped Vancouver (WHL) capture the Memorial Cup championship in 2007, earning a spot on the all-tournament team, and he won a gold medal with Canada at the 2007 World Junior Championships. Franson also ranks second on the Admirals with eight power-play goals in 2007-08.

Alex Goligoski, Defense (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins):

Alex Goligoski has tallied nine goals and 21 assists for 30 points in 63 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton as a 22-year-old rookie in 2007-08, his first pro season after a three-year collegiate career at the University of Minnesota. Goligoski, a native of Grand Rapids, Minn., participated in the 2008 AHL All-Star Classic and picked up two assists in three games with Pittsburgh after making his NHL debut on Feb. 13. A second-round draft choice in 2004, Goligoski has a plus-15 rating, good for second on the Penguins.

Brian Boyle, Forward (Manchester Monarchs):

After making his pro debut with the Monarchs late in 2006-07, Brian Boyle leads all AHL rookies with 28 goals and ranks second with 58 points in 67 contests this season. A first-round draft choice (26th overall) by Los Angeles in 2003, Boyle also picked up four goals and an assist in eight NHL games for the Kings this year, scoring in his NHL debut vs. New Jersey on Feb. 2. The 23-year-old from Hingham, Mass., is also tops among AHL freshmen in power-play goals (15), game-winners (6) and shots (228), and was the Rbk Edge/AHL Rookie of the Month for January.

Teddy Purcell, Forward (Manchester Monarchs):

Teddy Purcell, 22, has been a constant at the top of the league's rookie scoring list this season, and currently ranks fourth overall with 55 assists and 77 points in 63 games for Manchester. The native of St. John's, Nfld., was the Rbk Edge/AHL Rookie of the Month for November and earned MVP honors at the 2008 AHL All-Star Game after recording a hat trick and adding the decisive shootout goal in Canada's 9-8 win over PlanetUSA. Purcell made his NHL debut with Los Angeles on Jan. 15 and has totaled a goal and two assists in 10 games with the Kings.

Bobby Ryan, Forward (Portland Pirates):

The second overall pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Bobby Ryan lit up the AHL with 49 points in 48 games for Portland this season, his first as a professional after a standout junior career at Owen Sound (OHL). Ryan, a 21-year-old native of Cherry Hill, N.J., scored a goal in his NHL debut with Anaheim on Sept. 29 and has gone on to record seven points (4g, 3a) in 21 games for the Ducks this year. Ryan was voted a starter for PlanetUSA at the 2008 AHL All-Star Classic, and put together a nine-game scoring streak from Feb. 9 to Mar. 1.
