Lynx Appoint Team Chaplain
February 16, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
The Augusta Lynx are proud to announce today the appointment of Rev. Gerald P. Ragan as the first Team Chaplain in franchise history.
For the past two years, "Father Jerry" has been the Pastor at St. Mary on the Hill Church of Augusta, the largest parish in the Catholic Diocese of Savannah. He has been a priest with the Diocese the past 11 years, coming to Augusta in the summer of 2002 after several years as Pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish in Dublin, Ga.
A native of Philadelphia and lifelong hockey fan, Father Jerry will provide spiritual and emotional guidance to the Lynx players and coaches and their families, regardless of personal faith.
Father Jerry will provide a chapel program for interested Lynx players. He will be available to minister to the team on game nights and also will be available to meet individually with players and staff at their request.
"I grew up in Philly and was a big Flyers fan growing up following the Broad Street Bullies. I've followed the Lynx ever since I came to Augusta, and I always thought it would be a neat thing to get an opportunity to work with the team," Father Jerry said. "I see my role with the Lynx simply as a presence. Any talent that we have, I believe comes from the Lord, and the same goes for hockey players. Hopefully, that is what my presence will represent."
Given the rigors of professional hockey and the pressures within the hockey world to perform, Lynx coach Stan Drulia sees Father Jerry as a positive influence and role model for his players.
"I think it's a great idea having Father Jerry as our Team Chaplain, and it will give the players the opportunity to seek him out for spiritual guidance if they feel comfortable doing so," Drulia said.
