June 7, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - When you come out to Alliant Energy Field on Thursday, June 22nd, you will be a part of the experience in the Clinton Thrivent Financial Night at the ballpark. The Clinton LumberKings will host Southwest Michigan at 7:00 pm and baseballs will be passed out to the first 500 kids through the gate.

Pre-game activities include demonstrations at the Children's Fire Safety Smoke House donated by Carroll County and hosted by the Clinton Fire Department, an activity table and a "Special" Parade of Athletes. The Men of Calvary will be singing "The Star Spangled Banner." The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown my Darren Dreher, a track & field and bowling Special Olympic Athlete that participated in the 2005 State of Iowa Special Olympics, placing Silver in both events.

This is also a great opportunity to raise money for Special Olympics and allow them to maximize the number of athletes participating in their athletic endeavors.

The event is sponsored by the Heartland Regional Financial Office, where Thrivent volunteers from 34 Lutheran churches across three counties in Iowa and Illinois are busy promoting and selling tickets for this event. "Because of the size and scope of this event, a significant portion of the Heartland Region's Care in Regions Program dollars are being utilized," said Peggy Johannsen, Manager of Lutheran Community Services for Thrivent Financial for Lutherans-Heartland Region 332. "The Heartland Region's support allows 100% of the proceeds from ticket sales to be presented to the Local Special Olympic Directors."

Thrivent Night at the ballpark allows everyone to recognize how Special Olympics enhance the lives of these individuals through athletic and social opportunities. This includes athletes from 8 to 80 years of age. All the money raised stays in the local area to be utilized for registration fees, travel and the awards presented to the athletes. There is a great need for additional volunteers to coach and chaperone these athletes.

This is the first year that Thrivent Financial for Lutherans has approached local businesses to become "Community Business Partners". With this unity it has allowed box seat upgrades for the Special Olympic Athletes, food for the private tail-gate party and door prize give-aways to the Special Olympic Athletes provided by the Clinton LumberKings, Jewell-Osco, Beckwith Commercial Roofing, Happy Joe's, Sweetheart Bakery/Homer's Deli, RJS Electronics, the Clinton Sheriff's Department, the Clinton Fire Department, Carroll County Volunteer Fire Departments, The Frontier, Wonder Bread, and Gateway Travel.
