Dragons knock Lugnuts out of first

LANSING- The Dayton Dragons pushed at least one run across the plate in each of the first four innings as they cruised to an 8-5 win over the Lansing Lugnuts before 1,779 fans at Oldsmobile Park Wednesday night. The loss, coupled with a West Michigan win over Fort Wayne, put Lansing in second place in the race for the first half title.
The Dragons scratched across the first two runs of the game in the first inning. Jay Bruce singled with runners at the corners to plate Mike Dejesus and give Dayton a 1-0 advantage. Habelito Hernandez then smacked a double off of the left field wall to score Mike Griffin, pushing the lead to 2-0.
Griffin struck for two more runs in the second, blasting a home run to left field to make the score 4-0.
After another run crossd the plate in the third inning, B.J. Szymanski belted a two run homer of his own in the fourth to left-center field. His 11th dinger put Dayton up comfortably at 7-0.
Lansing began to fight back in the bottom of the fourth, plating four runs in a furious two out rally. Cory Patton started things off by hammering his ninth homer of the season, a solo shot to make the score 7-1. After back-to-back singles by Joey Metropoulos and Brian Pettway, David Hicks bouced a single into center field to plate Metropoulos to cut the lead to 7-2. Anthony Hatch then walked to load the bases for Brian Bormaster, who hit a two run single to center field to make it a 7-4 game.
The Lugnuts trailed by four in the ninth, but scored once more before having the tying run at the plate when the final out was recorded.
Carlos Fisher got the win for Dayton, throwing six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits.
Russ Savickas struggled in his outing for the Lugnuts, tossing just three innings and surrendering five runs on eight hits. He took the loss for Lansing.
Lansing (35-23) and Dayton (28-32) will play the third game of the four game set on Thursday evening at Oldsmobile Park. Righty Aaron Tressler (2-2, 1.65) will hurl for the Lugnuts. Zach Ward (4-0, 3.42) will take the hill for the Dragons. It will be a Molson Thirsty Thursday, with beer and soda on-sale for $2. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
