MWL1 Cedar Rapids Kernels

Ex-Kernel scores winning run on walk-off homer

June 7, 2006 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Casey Rowlett belted a walk-off home run off Tim Didjurgis (0-3) with one out in the 12th inning to plate former Kernel Richard Giannotti and give the Swing a 2-0 victory over the Kernels.

Cedar Rapids managed just three hits over the course of the game and fell to 26-33 in the first half.

Didjurgis walked Giannotti, who was released by the Angels during spring training, to lead off the deciding frame before Midwest League All-Star Colby Rasmus laid down a sacrifice bunt. That set the table for Rowlett to belt his first home run of the season, a high liner over the wall in left field.

Cedar Rapids starter Robert Mosebach was once again a victim of no run support by the Kernels offense as he worked eight innings of scoreless ball before turning the game over the bullpen. Mosebach has now worked 27 2/3 consecutive innings without receiving a single run as support.

Brad Coon saved the game for the Kernels in the 10th by hauling in a Luis Cotto low liner and gunning out Rowlett at home to end the inning.

Swing reliever Matt Trent (2-2) earned the victory with three perfect innings of work. Starter Trey Hearne, reliever Brian Stitt, and Trent combined for nine perfect innings of work from the fourth inning on as the Kernels were set down in order.

The two teams meet again tomorrow at John O'Donnell Stadium for a noon matinee with RHP Tommy Mendoza (3-5) scheduled to face Swing RHP Kyle Sadlowski (3-1). The game can be heard on 1600 AM ESPN The Zone with the South Slope Communications Triple Play Pregame show beginning at 11:40 a.m.
